Great player. Once scored 499 in an innings, which was a world record for very many years until Brian Lara broke it.

Indeed.  And (according to TMS Live Feed on the BBC) when he scored the 499 he was run out - imagine that, you are going for the 500 and get run out - they don't say whose fault it was though and I can't find any record of him beating to death one of his team mates with his bat.

Yes, he was a great player, though it has to be said that he wasn't a quick scorer.  I imagine Geoff Boycott modelled himself on him!
