Title: OMG - Burn the witch
Post by: pcolbeck on 04 May, 2016, 07:24:15 am
This is possibly the most disturbing video I have seen in years. I think you need to be over a certain age for the full impact but still:

https://youtu.be/yI2oS2hoL0k

That's destroyed my childhood. Well done Radiohead.

Well I enjoyed the animation but I don't get the reference. Could someone enlighten me? I was expecting either Dorothy or Maggie; and I realise now that when people say "Burn the witch!" they've probably been referring to a specific incident (in Trumpton? really?) rather than using a generic historic phrase.

Its a homage to The Wicker Man a cult film from the early 70s. "Burn the witch" was Monty Python I think.

Ah. I got the Wicker Man (though I've never seen the film) but was trying to make a Trumpton connection. "Blame Forster!" as Inspector Morse said (or was that Midsomer Murders? Who cares!)

You never saw the famous episode when Mrs Honeyman (the Chemist's wife) was accused of being a witch and burnt at the stake as she floated when ducked in Farmer Bells pond ?
It's the episode after the one where Mrs Dingle (the postmistress) was caught having a gang bang with Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grubb by Mr Robinson (the window cleaner) which was embarrassing for her and it's revealed that this is the reason Windy Miller drinks, she had promised him that time with the boys from Pippin Fort was a one off.

Surely the Trumpton connection is that the puppetry/animation is essentially exactly the same.

Or is it Chigley?  Or Camberwick Green?  :demon:

Gotta love Radiohead - so typical.

Unlike most Radiohead songs I like it immediately though.  Oddly accessible for them.  For me with them the usual process is to get excited they have another record coming out.  Then to get disappointed when I discover it's crap.  Then I try again, it grows, I try once more and it grows further then eventually it's about the best thing I've ever heard.  How do they do that?

I wondered if it was a reference to the middle english utopian village so beloved of That Woman's supporters.  Those places are always full of sinister goings-on.  Witchcraft is still alive and well in the woods above Hawnby on the Yorkshire Moors y'know!

The interwebs are filling up with speculation as to what it's all about.

Some people are saying it's about witch hunts on social media. Apparantly Radiohead deleted their Twitter account recently. Notice the bird at the beginning and end of the video.

That might be complete bollocks of course. Apparantly there are loads of references to other Radiohead songs and things in the video too. But I think you'd need to be a Radiohead freak to notice/get them....

I've been hearing the Radiohead track on repeat on 6Music since yesterday evening. I like it but I agree that it's a bit too accessible by Radiohead standards, and I guess that's what makes it sound like Keane (though I thought more Coldplay when I first heard it).

Just watched the video. Very amusing.

Where are Pugh, Pugh et al when you need them though, hmmm?

I suggest this whole thread qualifies for "You know you're middle-aged when... " And it's just as much because of Radiohead as Trumpton!

In a Wicker Man-related coincidence, Radcliffe & Maconie played Willow's Song on The Chain yesterday, which gave me a somewhat Proustian moment. Let's just say that Britt Ekland trying to save Edward Woodward through the power of late-night rhythmic dance had a profound effect* on me as a young man...

Kids these days probably wouldn't appreciate such artistry.

Sometimes I inflict my childhood TV programmes on my kids. They love Bagpuss, the Wombles, Mr Ben and the Clangers but disappointingly they didn't like Ivor the Engine.

It always strikes me how gentle kids programmes were back then. If you ask me it all started to go wrong with Rhubarb and Custard.

The gentleness of the children's programmes back then is clearly in counterpoint to the traumatising public information films they used to show.  Remember the railway line massacre?  Or what might happen if you flew a kite near power lines?  :jurek: :jurek: :jurek:

British TV programmes perhaps,   I wouldn't call Tom & Jerry or similar, gentle, and they were a regular feature of my Saturday mornings.

I've vague memories of watching Trumpton, Pogles Wood etc as a small,   but the Hanna Barbera stuff is more vivid in memory.  Wombles & Paddington came along when I was a bit older (9+) and I remember them fondly.

Spookily I was trying to explain Rastamouse to an American the other day (some convolution on the fact there's a Rasta tour bus in LA). I'd forgotten about Fingermouse, but that's very true. I'm very scared of the 1970s.

As for the TV references, you guys should consider yourselves lucky: in my day it was Twizzle, Four Feather Falls, and Torchy the Battery Boy.

I liked the song though. A pal of mine suggested that there was a bit of Rufus Wainwright in the vocals, and I think I agree.

I realise now that when people say "Burn the witch!" they've probably been referring to a specific incident (in Trumpton? really?) rather than using a generic historic phrase.

In the back of the rumpity bumpity army truck
;D

But I dont get the joke. Or perhaps its a 5-second joke, perhaps better suited to 2 frames in Private Eye.
"Epsiode of Trumpton turns into Wicker Man". Yeah ok ...  but for 4 minutes?

Perhaps I expected a lot more, having read this thread first and delayed watching the vid! Still, at least they tried to do something clever, so kudos for breaking the mould a bit.

(Now, Money For Nothing, THAT was a clever satire ...    /oldman ...  )

I wondered if it was a reference to the middle english utopian village so beloved of That Woman's supporters.  Those places are always full of sinister goings-on.  Witchcraft is still alive and well in the woods above Hawnby on the Yorkshire Moors y'know!

‘It is my belief, Watson, founded upon my experience, that the lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of sin than does the smiling and beautiful countryside.’  Sherlock Holmes.

Dear Noris McWhirter,

I have a black, circular, vinyl disc, with a small hole in the centre.  Is this a record?
