Kim, can I see some sort of cable, or elastic, running between pedals on each side of the tandem in this photo?  -

Wassat about then? Keeping them horizontal for easy clip in, perhaps?

A cunning scheme I read about on the electric internet to ensure that the pedals maintain the same default orientation, defying gravity where necessary.  It's a length of 3mm elastic under moderate tension.  It ensures that the stoker pedals, with Power Grips fitted, stay strap-side-up for ease of entry.

The usual stoker, barakta (who is not an SPD user) has enough arm-related issues with setting off that this seemed worth trying.  Lack of foot retention for the stoker was quickly proven to be a liability, given my tendency towards relatively high cadences.

I've now got double-sided SPDs on the front (those nasty combined SPD/platform ones had a wonderful habit of allowing the tread on my shoes to 'clip in' at a 45 degree angle between the clip mechanism and the outside of the pedal), but have managed to retain the elastic.

... and also useful for the captain to get in the clips when the stoker is already 'clipped in' the toeclips.

As seen on my tandem:

If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

Fair enough. Must admit I could only stick a beard for a while but I probably would have been ok if I had had clippers.

Just seen this photo from the weekend, and realised that I appear to be eyeing up the contents of a skip:
And what would be wrong in that?  :)

Also, is your front light on in that photo or is that flash reflecting on a reflector?

Front light's on, though the photo was also taken with flash (seen reflecting off my gloves).  It was a bit gloomier than it looks.

Tho' mebbe in another 15 years the occasional cat-call from teenagers will have changed from 'oi, Jesus' to 'oi Father Christmas'.... ::-)
