A cunning scheme I read about on the electric internet to ensure that the pedals maintain the same default orientation, defying gravity where necessary. It's a length of 3mm elastic under moderate tension. It ensures that the stoker pedals, with Power Grips fitted, stay strap-side-up for ease of entry.
The usual stoker, barakta (who is not an SPD user) has enough arm-related issues with setting off that this seemed worth trying. Lack of foot retention for the stoker was quickly proven to be a liability, given my tendency towards relatively high cadences.
I've now got double-sided SPDs on the front (those nasty combined SPD/platform ones had a wonderful habit of allowing the tread on my shoes to 'clip in' at a 45 degree angle between the clip mechanism and the outside of the pedal), but have managed to retain the elastic.
