Title: 700C rims for 32mm+ tyres
Post by: Chris N on 18 April, 2008, 12:17:51 pm
Any recommendations for a 700C rim to take 32mm or wider tyres?  Currently using Mavic Open Pro/Open Sport with 37mm tyres, which is probably pushing it a bit.  Would like something light-ish and robust (think touring/cyclo cross) with a double eyelet in silver.  Disc-specific would be nice, but I don't think that's available in a 700C rim.

Although they list Open Pro as 19-23mm (http://www.chickencycles.co.uk/index.php?cat=19&sub=30&ord=2) although I think that 37c is as you say pushing it a bit a 32c should be OK. As a footnote although the data on the distributors website quotes 19-23 the actual rim quotes 19-28mm; as does the Sport version that you are using.

Many touring bikes use the A319 or 719 which are ideal for 32c tyres, although most Cyclo cross riders will use something more like the double eyelet Open Pro. The data of the A317 looks like it is a cross between the A319/719 and Open Pro so in your case well worth considering, especially of you know you will only every use it as disc specific, although rim brake rims are more versatile in that respect if you feel that you may ever want to swap between bikes for example.

That'll do nicely, thanks.  Cheaper still at Parker International (http://www.parker-international.co.uk/ProductDetails/mcs/referrer/froogle/productID/7510/groupID/8/categoryID/65).  Interestingly, the wider 29er version (TN 719 Disc) is lighter, but takes tyres from 1.50 - 2.30" rather than 28 - 47mm.

I used DRC ST19s with 28mm tyres, they will take larger ones. Good enough though I will change them this year for narrower ones.

Mavic Aksiums will take a 32mm cyclocross tyre.

I've got three Swiss DT Trek 7.1 rims and they seem to be good. Someone on ACF had a problem, but I can't remember what it was. I chose them because the rim width was somewhere between the Open Pros and the A317 range (both of which I've got as well.)

The DT is a lovely rim IMHO.
