I studied Italian for a year at Uni and mostly winged it by using the French word but putting an Italian ending on it. Quite an effective tactic on the whole.

d.

Really? Can you give an example of where this tactic would work 'coz I can't think of one?

Off the top of my head, the verbs mangiare and partire.

Obviously it doesn't work 100% of the time, but it seemed to do me all right.

Possibly not, but I only studied Italian for a year, so I didn't get on to the advanced stuff.

They adopt the French pronunciation...

Well, they attempt to adopt something vaguely resembling a French pronunciation, but with varying degrees of success.

d.
Why hasn't anyone mentioned the German pronunciation of Leopard? It's as relevant as French.

I suspect the Lëtzebuergeusch pronunciation is fairly similar to German.

Not from today's stage, but this one Liggetism had us giggling yesterday:

"the defending champion refuses to go out of the television screen and die gracefully"

Woah, the comments are getting more surreal. Maybe it's because they've been commentating for 3 weeks now.

"When he was a boy, Cadel started looking at horses" ?????

Did he stare a possums and take the odd glance at a wallaby whilst he was at it?

At one point on Stage 19, I think on the climb before Alpe-d'Huez, Cadel Evans was climbing, right between the Schleck brothers, and Phil said "It's a Schleck sandwich - let's hope he doesn't get indigestion".    :D

I've been catching up after a week away.

Liggett on Contador in the Pyrenees when he started struggling.

Yes, this Schleck sandwich thing. They said it again about Frandy and Cadel today.

There are two Schlecks and one Cadel.

Looking at your average sarnie, there are two slices of bread = 2 Schlecks and a single filling (cheese for arguments sake) = Cadel

So, it's a Cadel sandwich.

A Schleck sandwich would be a bread sandwich, which is clearly silly.

Ok, so the Tour has finished, I am still obsessed and I am obviously suffering from cold turkey -

though not in a sandwich, I may add.

If anyone starts mentioning multiple fillings I will not be responsible for my actions...

Yep. What am I going to do all afternoon now?

I would not be surprised if Steve Coogan admits to subbing for Sherwen for parts of these broadcasts.
