Son has a part time job. He turns 16 tomorrow, and didn't even apply, but his sister made such a good impression on her paper round that the shop owner asked for my son specifically. (He has just moved into larger premises as a convenience store). I think it may be something to do with my son being smart, intelligent, well behaved and mannered, and 6'4" and built like a second row forward.

Just has to check legislation for who can sell alcohol, tobacco and firearms lottery tickets.

Son hasn't got a part time job as it would not have been compatible with studying and life in general. However, I now have a bat license which allows me to hold specimens and material derived from specimens of bats.
But not to deal with live ones.

That is good news, it must be a relief.

Mine: Proud Parent Moment. Second Shallot = lazy, layabout, severely dyslexic, spent three years not studying hard enough for A levels then two years on JSA playing computer games, has just finished first year of uni. Results: 98% overall, 100% exam scores. OMG.  :smug:

Fantastic! Sometimes kids need time to grow into their adult selves, it can take time, it looks like that is what might have happened here!

Wow!  Assuming STEM subject with 100% exam scores type stuff but impressive nonetheless.

I also agree that maturing and finding something you are interested in can make a huge difference.  Especially if there is a specific learning difference/difficulty in the mix.

Well, I'm now "employed" (albiet travel expenses only) as an Ecological Consultant (well, ok, an amateur lepidopterist) specialising in  Moth Surveys for my old college's golf course which is looking to get more survey results to fund more ecological improvements!

I've put my trap out this evening, looking forward to what we find tomorrow morning, and the golf course manager is really excited about it too!   ;D

And when I mentioned that I had been thinking of getting a bat detector, he'd be keen to "employ" me as a Bat Man too!   :smug:

Both kids finished exams  yesterday. Miss M for good , although she still has her Masters dissertation to write.
London beckons as boyfriend is already working down that way .

Master M has done his final 3rd year exam , but he is going on to do an M.Sc at Leeds.
We took him out for lunch in Lancaster today to celebrate the end of his  course and his 21st birthday.

Both of them were advised that they were Ph.D material, but they  want to get into the world of work and start earning proper money.

Part of me feels old and part of me is pleased to see them getting on with it.

Sensible move.
I've made a fair few mistakes in life, and with the benefit of 20:20 hindsight doing a PhD was by far the biggest. Still, you live and learn.

Well done to them both.

Anyhoo, up early today to check the moth trap.  A few map winged swift, silver ground carpet, small angle shades,  middle barred minor.  Unfortunately golf course portable generator was out of action, so I had to set the trap near to the machinery shed using a long extension lead.  Still, not bad haul considering it was a rather wet and windy night.

Yeah, man! That's a bit of really good news . . .

Two good things on Saturday.

1) I sold my two best bikes. To the same bloke!

2) I discovered that, as of I'm not sure when, Yodel deliver 6 days a week. Not such great news for the man in the van but bloody brilliant when you're waiting for parts o repair punters' bikes.

Only it's Yodel, so they may simply not turn up at all (but lie about it) or turn up while you are out and dump the items somewhere completely random (and possibly not tell you where).  Yodel are incompetent, lying scum.

Just been on a house viewing, and seen the first house I've been really excited about  :D

And it's the right price!

Now then.  Anybody want a lawnmower and some garden tools?
