installed cable guilds as per photograph
connect cable from lever to connector and secure with grub screw

PROBLEM


I been told you do NOT secure the cable from the spring to the connector, HOW CAN THIS WORK THEN?

 I do not understand the next and final stage to finish the operation to permit gear changing

The spring set you linked to is for the older style of shifters with the lever above the bar.

Essentially the old style had the gear cable the wrong way round with the head in the derailleur and the clamp inside the lever. The newer style uses a more conventional layout with a cable clamp at the derailleur end.

It’s not clear from your description which style you have, or what you’ve done exactly...
