The end of Q magazine

Not quite the magazine of my youth, but I was an avid early reader

It was a big thing during my time at Central St. Martins - early 90's.
Can't say that I was ever drawn to it.
Pretentious twaddle.
Way too mainstream for my liking.
I'm surprised that it has survived above the surface for as long as this.

Well no one at C St. M could be seen dead reading it lol.

Can I just say that this thread is the first time I have ever heard of Q magazine.

Did I miss much?

PS I just asked my dear wife if she had ever heard of it, and the answer was "I don't think so, no."

I bought the first 100 or so issues and had them all kept in pristine condition until my late (first) wife threw them out in a fit of OCD one day. It was generally well-written, focused on the music rather than trying to be fashionable or political, and managed to get access to some pretty big names.  The reviews were good and I bought several albums solely on their recommendation, without having heard them.

It was a good product for its time. Its arrival coincided with the mass marketing of the compact disc, which gave it scope not only to cover 'current' music but also to wallow in nostalgia. I recall the first issue came with a free book reviewing 'the best' of the back catalogues that were available at the time. Unfortunately, the reviewers were so busy giving their opinions of the music that they often neglected to notice how atrocious some of those early analogue to digital transfers were and sang the praises of CDs that were, frankly, inferior to the vinyl originals.

Later launches such as Mojo and Uncut seemed to have squeezed Q out of the market. Still, 30+ years isn't bad going.

I used to read it avidly from ~1993 up to around 2008.  The rot set in around the time they did a multi-page spread on the recent activities of Gorillaz' Murdoc Niccalls, who does not exist.  I terminated my subscription after they did a nine (9) page article on Cheryl Cole.  The man from the magazine said I was on my way rang up shortly thereafter to inquire as to the reason for the cancellation and promptly had his ears set ablaze with Bad Swears.

It discussed the intersection of Quantum physics and the designs of Mary Quant from the perspective of the Quantocks, as applied to the Queen exchange in chess.

Not quite the magazine of my youth...

Q was not the magazine of anyone’s youth. It was aimed squarely at middle aged men.

Alan Jones gave Uncut the edge that Q was always sorely missing. I used to see him about the place when I worked at IPC, looking like an LSD casualty, but by all accounts he was pretty switched on and knew what the fuck he was doing. Also had some amazing anecdotes, which alas I only ever got to enjoy second hand.

I liked The Word when it came along, which seemed to be offering a hipper, more savvy version of the same content. Didn’t last long though.

Miss von Brandenburg was a regular reader from the age of ~20 but I suspect this may have been down to the quality and/or content of the German music press at the time ;D

With a name like Brandenburg one would have expected her to have impeccable musical taste.

Then I was old before my time. And I’ve not aged much since!

Mostly she does, apart for an inexplicable liking for Roy Harper.

I've never got over the loss of Melody Maker.  Ok, much of the featured stuff was unlistenable noise, but the writing was great.

Nothing inexplicable about that - although I'll admit that his between-song rambling in concert can be more than a bit tedious.

That makes three of us. When I first read the thread title I thought "oh, something like Granta" and passed by on the other side.

Fission.

Specialising in Marxist literary criticism, iirc.

Mr Google says regular publication ceased in February 2006.
