Dog with upset tummy
« on: 23 September, 2015, 08:36:56 am »
So Tilly has developed an upset tummy. Runny poo

She's fine apart from that. Its probably the maggoty dead mouse she picked up on her walk Sunday evening (we managed to stop her eating it).

She's 18 weeks old. Any advice from the experienced dog owners here. If she was a child I'd starve her for 24 hour but I have never had a puppy before.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Puppies learn what's safe to eat, by eating anything and either being OK or rapidly expelling it from either end.

Ours had a bad attack of the squits when he was small. Mrs. Wow and I were on holiday. Our younger daughter took on the cleaning responsibilities, I am pleased to say. The dog got better but has always had rather delicate guts. We feed him the "sensitive" dog food now and he's much better for it.

I remembered our next door neighbour is a retired vet. Went round and asked her advice. No food at all just water for 24 hours then a couple of days on small amounts of boiled rice and chicken.
I'm also going to order some Canikur tablets which are supposed to be very good.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Have you just changed the food Tilly is getting, sometimes it takes a few week for her to get used to it.

Yeah starve her, would work, for a day and let her have her food in smaller portions after, eating too much too fast will make it come out fast too.

When changing food, add a little of the new grub to the old and then over a week make it more and more until she is on only the new grub. Not unheard for pubs to have a diggy tummy for a few days on the trod. As said they will eat anything, our Tilley liked cat poop for a while and was darn fast at getting it down her, only found out when you smelled it on her breath :)

Of course it it gets worse, time to a visit to the vet with sample poop bag :) Does the runny poop look like normal runny poop, as in no blood or creepy crawlies in it?

EDIT good plan there with the neighbour. Rice and chicken is a very good bet and good to solve a sicky pup.

Woolly, no change in diet since we have had her. We upped the amount a bit but not a lot a week ago as she is getting bigger (putting on 1kg a week).

Is Tilly still eating the yew berries? I'd get her to the vet if her poo hasn't normalised by the morning.

Is her poo mucous-y or bloody? Is she a stressy pup, or quite chilled out?

It sounds like she's a proper scavenger, so I would make sure she has a rock solid "leave it" from an early age. Have you started training her in basic commands?

Canikur is a probiotic which helped our friend's dog get over colitis caused by stress.

The yew tree is fenced off and out of bounds these days. Poo is just like melted milk chocolate no blood or mucus.
She's a chilled out girl really I fact people keep saying what a calm and chilled puppy, they don't know about her mad half hours  :)
Yes she will scavenge anything she can it's the lab genes. We are working on leave it. Sit, stay and down she is doing well with, leave it is proving more difficult.
I'm cooking her rice and chicken for the morning at the moment.

How's Tilly today?

I think she's fine thanks.
No poos at all yesterday (probably as she had been starved on Wednesday) and she loved chicken and rice. This morning a normal poo and I'm mixing in her kibble with what's left of the chicken and rice. Back to normal food regime tomorrow if all goes well today.
She loves the Canikur tablets, she thinks they are a crunchy treat !

Oh dear sick again today. Wouldn't eat her breakfast. Wouldn't eat lunch either and this afternoon vomited up what looks like last nights tea. Now vomiting after drinking so its off to the vets.
She's never turned down food before. She's looking very sad and is lying down in her crate rather than following me round everywhere :(

Oh dear. Vet asap. Is she fully vaccinated?

She is fully vaccinated and get checked by the vets every month on the Well Puppy Scheme. First vet wasn't happy with her and sent us to the main practice about 12 miles away and they have put her on a drip and are going to X-ray her to see if she has swallowed something. It is probably just gastroenteritis but better safe than sorry. She is staying at the vets overnight.
We have only had her seven weeks but the house feels empty without her.

Aw, poor thing, hope she's better soon.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Vet just rang to say nothing showed up on the X-rays bar some gas in her intestine. Painkillers, antibiotics and anti vomiting medicine has been administered and she's on a drip. Hopefully she will be much better by morning.

Oh, poor puppy and poor you!  Was she sedated or anaesthetised for the xrays? I really hope she's improved by morning.

I hope she's better soon. From my very  limited experience with dogs they bounce back really quickly and hopefully she'll be back to normal by tomorrow.

Vet rang this morning first thing to say she's much brighter this morning. No vomiting and has had a small meal. I could hear her barking in the background which is good as she was silent all yesterday afternoon and whilst at the vets last night. Hopefully she is coming home at tea time.

Tilly came home last night much improved. My god she stank though and the farting !
The whole house was encased in a stinky miasma. We bathed her and she still stank.
Today less farty and stinky and much much brighter. She's been enjoying chicken and rice and taken her pills like a good girl.

TBF, you get much the same experience from small children. Larger ones have issues of their own.

No, dog farts ftw.

Never had a small child empty a room, but experienced it many times with a dog.
It is simpler than it looks.

Just a heads up that the rice in "chicken and rice" is far better to be brown rice. Our whippet pup had issues for a while and that was what sorted him out.
Also a google for "Dog food directory" will likely raise a few eyebrows, it certainly did ours and we promptly changed foods.
