the youngest has just come back from the school xmas (yes xmas it's not even December yet) fair with a 50p VHS of Bambi :'( I'd still put it on top of the list.
Having watched it a million times with them when they were toddlers is a factor

I'm not fond of Bambi - it's too po-faced and there are no good songs.

Jungle book has the best songs but the animation is carp; and there's no 'Man is bad for the environment' message (being a R Kipling book)
Toy story has the best animation and story but Pixar doesn't really count (otherwise Wall-E would be in contention) Tron stars Jeff Bridges nuff said.

PS. NEVER confuse Disney and Pixar.
Pixar were creaming Disney in the CGI animation field and were bought out to end that particular competition.
Pixar animations were always story-led which is why they were/are so good.

The songs alone stand up on their own. I dare you not to be cheered up when "Bear Bare Necessities" is played
(and personally I think the animation is superb)
The characterisation is superb; but it marked the start of Disney's low budget scribbly animation style after the previous richly animated masterpieces.
Surprised that their first fully home-grown offering The Lion King hasn't been nominated.
I've yet to see Treasure Planet, the last traditional Disney cartoon.

Lion King, mainly for the music (though I may have been influenced by the superb live show at Animal Kingdom.)
Pixar/Disney - Bugs life - again influence - first film we took TC Jr. to, age about 4 . At the point near the beginning where an ant got a raspberry stuck on his head, he laughed so long and loud that the whole audience were looking at him, and laughing along. Brilliant!

I don't mind the drawing/animation in The Jungle Book - it's better than in The Aristocats and 101 Dalmatians, for a start. But the story is really badly told, the script is shockingly poor and some of the characters are utterly cringeworthy - the Beatles-esque vultures being the worst offenders. Yeah, the songs are great but it's a hugely overrated film.

Lion King is good but suffers from the awful Timon & Pumbaa element. Of the "modern" Disney films, I'm rather fond of Beauty & The Beast - which has great songs, great animation, great characters and a great story.
But I'm surprised that only one person so far has given the correct answer to the question, namely Adrian, who I always knew to be a wise and sensible fellow.
OK, so Dumbo suffers from being rather too short but it's otherwise pretty damn well perfect. The songs are easily as good as those in Jungle Book and the animation is far superior. What I really love about the old Disney films is that they always had at least one scene of gratuitous animated showboating, and Dumbo has the best example of them all, viz Pink Elephants On Parade. Utter genius.
Good shout by RogerZ on Mary Poppins too - definitely the best mostly-live-action Disney. Julie Andrews is quite something in that.
Treasure Planet is truly awful, by the way.

I have to agree with Smutchin about the Scouse Vultures, the usual lazy sterotype about people from Liverpool.
Disney was never afraid of poetic license, Sammy the Way-Out Seal, was actually a Sea-Lion.

I don't think it was anything to do with negative Scouse stereotypes, I think they just wanted to make them Beatles-y to cash in on how popular the Beatles were then. Besides, the vultures might be a bit ropey, but Shere Khan looks like Jimmy Hill and the elephants are superb.

Yeah, but they're done so cack-handedly, they end up just looking like bad stereotype Scousers.
Couldn't they have persuaded the real Beatles to do the voices at least? The Indian theme would have been right up their street at that time. ;)
I don't really see the apes in Jungle Book as racial stereotypes - they're just jazz enthusiasts, as Damon says. I think the worst racial stereotyping in any Disney film unfortunately comes in the best of them all - the "Jim Crows" in Dumbo. Fortunately, kids these days won't get the cultural reference and will only see them as funny characters, but it's a nasty blot on a great movie. Unless they're meant to be ironic, but somehow I doubt it.

Can I nominate the final fight scene between Merlin and
Morgaine some wart-ridden batty old witch in Sword in the Stone?
The rest of the film was adequate, but the sight-gags in the fight were just brilliant.
Otherwise, +1 for Jungle Book / Incredibles combo.

Yeah +1 for the AristoCats. I love the animation style in this one and it was Pcolbeck juniors favourite when he was little. Cute kittens, an alcoholic goose and some great jazz what more can you want from a film.

I can't believe people are criticising DISNEY films for racism. They were made about a hundred years ago!

Banning the Merchant of Venice?
Boycotting cave art that only shows male hunters?
Just enjoy them for what they are.

I like Jungle Book, though the vultures are a bit excruciating. Most Disney films are sh1te and formulaic, right down to the 'He's dead! No he isn't after all!' schtick.
And it is fair to criticise something within the last half century for racism. Our enlightened age didn't begin with the end of apartheid, you know, and it's still something we show our children. What values do we want them to cherish?
I particularly hate Dumbo, because there is a subplot about, IIRC, the clowns, which was shoddy anti-union propaganda.
Disney supported McCarthy, of course.
The Pixar films are brilliant.
