Tonight is the same as last Sunday, smoked fish (Cobbler last week, haddock this), mashed potatoes/carrots/sweet potatoes, cabbage with bacon. I am aiming to make enough mash to top a Cottage pie for Mrs T and TLD to have for supper tomorrow, too.

Veg lasagne, and used up some of the fruit kicking around in a most excellent apple, blackberry, and calvados pie, served with ice cream.

I've never had truffles or truffle oil. How is it?

Very pungent & earthy ??  More of a smell than a taste in the food ? You probably wouldn't call sniffing the bottle pleasant ?         I had a risotto with mushrooms & truffle oil in a restaurant last week which was lovely, so picked up a tiny bottle from M&S to try. It's only olive oil with truffle extract/essence...

From Wiki

Their one-dimensional flavor is also changing common understanding of how a truffle should taste," Daniel Patterson complained in a New York Times article.[3]

Gordon Ramsay has referred to natural truffle oil as "a chef's dream",[4] and to synthetic truffle oil as "one of the most pungent, ridiculous ingredients ever known to [this] chef."

Anthony Bourdain said, "Let it be stated here, unto forever and eternity, [synthetic] truffle oil is not food."[5]

Martha Stewart expressed her dislike of synthetic truffle oil in a 2014 post on Reddit, stating "I think truffle oil is one of the few ingredients that doesn't belong in anyone's kitchen. It's ruinous of most recipes."[6]

Joe Bastianich said, "It’s made by perfumists. It’s garbage olive oil with perfume added to it, and it’s very difficult to digest. It’s bad for you. It’s bad for New Yorkers. It’s bad for the American people. So, stop it.". [7]

Not sure how much I trust Wiki, but I suppose it might be worth trying some in context, some time. Most of my best food experiences have come when I wasn't looking for them, and maybe I should stick with that.

Beef with black pepper sauce & steamed rice at this establishment:

I hadn't seen this redecoration from 2013 until this evening, and nor had the staff of the Ming Dynasty.  Amusement ensued.  It's still on the bike.

Quick & dirty Shakshuka  as I'm going out.      Sizzle a couple of cloves of mashed garlic & some chopped chillies in oil, add a tin of chopped tomatoes (i used plum ones & mashed them).  Simmer down for a bit & chuck some olives in (or not).   Crack a couple of eggs into the mix & poach them,   top up with crumbled feta.

Serve with crusty bread or rice.

Omelettes, made from eggs with about 1 food mile on them. Yummy.

Preceded by a couple of sweetcorn cobs with 20 food metres on them. Doubly yummy

The antipasti I bought to nibble on while I cooked the sauce to go with the gnocchi.

The sauce will have to go into the freezer, as I'm full of stuff in oil now.

Which is why you shouldn't shop when you're hungry.
Milk please, no sugar.
