Here at chez Pingu, a not bad wee Gewurtztraminer, mmm...lychees. Not something we drink all the time, but it makes a change from sauv blanc.

If you have any Drambuie knocking about, might I recommend a Rusty Nail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_duo_and_trio_cocktails#Rusty_Nail) as another good way to use up the Bells.

Thanks -- I need to go to our local-ish Waitrose soon. I shall have a look!Waitrose. It's made by Dragonfly teas. I've not seen it anywhere else, but I don't think it's exclusive to Waitrose. My whole family is now addicted to the stuff!Rooibos Earl Grey. That sounds interesting. Where do you get it?
I tried to be as local as possible this year and discovered that Ontario makes <snip> a great Icewine, which Ontario does better than anywhere else in the world. Thanks for that FM. Reminded me to put the sparkling Icewine our Canadian niece brought us for Christmas into the fridge. We will drink it tomorrow evening.

Sloe Gin. My cockle is extremely cold after my ride home and I'm attempting to warm it!
Dinner is a slap-up celebratory meal at the local curry house in honour of my daughter's 16th birthday, which will inevitably require beer, including my daughter's first legal alcohol on licensed premises!

Only if you're drinking it by the pint.
Water. Spinning class just finished.
I bought it thinking it was one of their slightly posh guinness brands. In fact it appears to be their tramp juice. It's like a slightly bitter barley wine, and I've just spotted (too late) it's 7.5% ABV.

Crabbie's alcoholic ginger beer.I drank a bottle once. Too, too sweet! I like the Fentiman's Traditional Ginger Beer, & if there was a properly alcoholic version (it has a little alcohol in it, but not enough to be classed as an alcoholic drink) I'd happily drink that as well, but I'll never touch Crabbies again.
Crikey. It's very sweet. But not unpleasant. Maybe could do with a bit more of a ginger kick though.
d.
Had a splendid pint of Harveys at lunchtime.
Dandelion coffee
A bottle of Shepherd Neame Spitfire. When did this stop being a naturally conditioned bottled ale? It's pasteurised now. Not unpleasant, but a decided retrograde step.
Nothing. Norwegian hotels have no kettle! Arrghhh!

Eh? As far as I know, 1698 is the only Sheps beer ever to have been available as a BCA.
But I could be wrong.

I'm sure Spitfire used to be bottle conditioned.

Holden's Golden Sunset.
Hogs Back Arromas over Tongham. It's 9%, but really suffers if chilled. Goes all thin and watery. Warm, it's nice, albeit still not the mouthfeel you usually get off something this weighty.
Tesco's ground coffee (hate Tesco) the coffee is nice though.

Coffee for me. I'm not sure of the brand 'cos it's from a plastic container in the freezer (didn't keep the packet or snip a bit of the label off  ).
I think it's some Spanish supermarket stuff that my mum got me last time she came over here. Knowing her, it's probably cheap stuff but it tastes pretty good, especially when it's made quite strong.

A really nice Chardonnay. Then I might open a red. But I won't drink enough to have lustful thoughts about Simon Cowell this week.I take it that required a Chardonnay and a red wine box.
Our local shop has started doing Carlsberg Special Brew in little 275ml bottles. I love barley wine and stronger beers, and thought it'd make a change from the Aromas over Tongham that I usually get. It wasn't bad, but if you obey the "serve extra chilled" instruction, it tastes disappointingly thin. Although fuller when warmed up, it's a bit of a one dimensional taste. I'd get bored if I drank it regularly.
Nice to see them making an effort to move away from the street drinkers market.
A Nice Cup of Tea.I'm sure Kim will join me in claiming that that's a contradiction in terms.

My local supermarket had a bottle of something that looked nice; 2006 Chateau le Bonnat Graves. It didn't have a price, nor did their computer know. So the checkout drone took the bottle away for what felt like ages, and came back with the query "£8?"Not nice at all. Tastes metallic and chemical. I may not even finish the bottle.
Which seemed a lot for a bottle of red. Anyway, I bought it.
On getting home and checking the interwebs, it seems that the going rate for a bottle is £12.70.
I'll let you know if it's any good. After I've gone back to the supermarket with my trailer to clear them out of the stuff.

A can of John Smiths Extra Smooth - slightly out of date. Not what I would normally choose to drink but I found a three out of a four pack that someone left at our BBQ last summer in the garage tonight when I was cleaning up the paint things after painting the ceiling. Not sure if I will keep the other two or chuck them away.

A nice glass of Jack Daniels over ice.
I know it's not a posh/'good' whisky but I bought a bottle (on offer) recently as I've only liked whisky the past couple years (my Dad having introduced me to Bushmills 10yr Old) and thought I'd revisit JD having only had it with coke or as hastily downed shots when younger.
And I like it, not as smooth as others but the harshness has it's own je ne sais quoi.
Who makes that then?

JD is OK. American Whiskey is a completely different drink to Scotch though. Irish is different too but a close relation. I prefer Irish to Scotch these days ( I know I'm a philistine). I'd rather have a decent port or brandy though.

On Weds, in the BrewDog pub, we got a free sample (the end of the keg they couldn't get rid of by the looks of it) of Tokyo*, 18.2%, about 50ml between us. That was a) plenty but b) surprisingly good. But you had to hold it in your mouth, let it warm up & the flavour develop & then it was like drinking nice port. It didn't make us inclined to try the 30%+ stuff though, that was way strong enough.

I did try smoking tea once. It didn't work....The first time I was in the Antarctic, the two smokers made a pact to give up, just after the ship had gone north (March), and put all their fags on the bonfire. As there was no possibility of resupply until December they jolly well had to give up.

I don't rate this actually, it sounds (and tastes) like an attempt to infiltrate the vertical drinking establishment market - stick with SA or Dark if you can find it.
Just finishing off a nice Rhymney Export. Tesco stocks it, but probably not outside South Wales.

Here in Embra it's not a question of the Brains you want, rather the Brains you can get! There are certainly many better local brews that carry off the same hoppy, light-coloured thing off much better (Deuchars; Schiehallion; Williams Bros Gold/Joker) - but sometimes an exile just can't resist a hint of a taste of home.
The best Welsh-brewed equivalent that I've tried to the Scottish beers listed above is probably Cwrw Haf. But then I don't get out much ;)

I lived in Embra in the mid-late 90s, I remember seeing Brains SA as a guest ale in a couple of pubs (one opposite EBC somewhere springs to mind). Nice to see a Welsh beer there, but not really a taste of home as I'm from 200 miles north of Cardiff originally! Deuchars IPA was one of my faves when I was there, along with Caley 80 shilling... do they still brew Gillespie's Stout?
Double nom :P :PDouble bottle opener too - caplifter AND corkscrew
Tesco (I know, I know...) have an own brand IPA made in Scotland - by Harviestoun, I think - that's labelled as a double IPA. It's on special at the moment at £1 for a 330ml bottle. I bought a couple of bottles last night, got it home & saw it's 9.2%!!!
It's one of the hoppiest beers I've ever tasted. I know there's a scale for hops, but this must be near the top of the scale. It's definitely not a quaffing beer, but worth a try, if that's your bag.
Creme de cassis and Calvados
Oooh! Lethal!
Vodka and Iron Bru...the perfect drink to compliment a corned beef sandwich
A very nice cider called "Thatcher's Heritage". Wondering if the name is a joke, an earnest statement of political alignment or quite innocent.

I am anticipating drinking myself silly in Cleobury Mortimer on Friday at the Kings Head - the Hobsons brewery tap in the town. Their mild is splendiferous. And, entirely by coincidence (really!), there's a beer festival in town as well where they are serving lots of Shropshire ales...

Their taste the difference stuff is a bit hit & miss. The Czech lager is a pale imitation of the real thing, whereas the porter is really rather good. I had their fino at Christmas & that was very crisp.

Had a Girardin Kriek at the weekend, which was a lot more accessible than the Cantillon. One for the palate unaccustomed to hardcore Kriek, perhaps, but not as interesting as the Cantillon. Also a Girardin Gueuze, which was just magnificent - in many ways more like champagne than beer.
Now drinking De Molen Amerikaans - a Belgian version of an American-style IPA. Bloody marvellous. Full of hops but much better balanced than some American beers I've tried.

This house is devoid of ale.*
Several years have passed since this situation last presented itself. I know this to be true because on his last night with us, Woolly and I each consumed a bottle of Thomas Hardy 2008, which I have had since then. It was too young. In my opinion, Thomas Hardy ale should be at least 5 years old before it is consumed.
*So I'm about to open a bottle of wine.
I'm lying. I've just checked the cupboard and there's another bottle of Thomas Hardy 2008 lurking at the back. I will keep that at least until their return and then I think I'll drink it on my own. ;)

the beer in question was Exmoor Gold, tasted like the liquid run-off from a recently fertilised field down in Exmoor, but was nectar when tried back up in Ripon, go figure)which just goes to show that some landlords will keep on selling even a local beer when it's gone off, especially in a touristy area where they know that most of the customers won't be back whatever.
Just about to open a bottle of Muriel , a Spanish red from Majestic.
What with the budget coming up I figure that booze is only going to get more expensive in the short term. It might be worth stocking up with stuff you like if you can get it at a decent price at the moment.

I haven't seen those, must look harder... Sainsburys have a similar range of own-brand beers, basically commissioned from small independent breweries. Freed from the possibility of tainting their own reputation, I think they try something a bit riskier. The IPA is very good.
I'm working my way through a 75cl bottle of Leffe Blonde beer. It's too strong really at 6.6%.
It's strange stuff and whenever I've drunk it before, it has reminded me of something and I've just identified what: the mouthwash on offer at the dentist's whenever I have my teeth drilled.
A single malt Balvenie or something. A birthday present in a wooden tube.
Not bad. It's not Lagavulin but it is peaty so its an acceptable substitute.
Cwrw.
A'Bunadh. I have to check the spelling as well, even though I've had a succession of bottles of this liquid fire. It's the spaces and apostrophes, combined with the cask-strengthiness of it, which all conspire to jumble my brain.

See, what we really need to do is do a late night skype single malt pronunciation conference call. After 11.30pm, if you can still pronounce the name of what you are drinking, you're disqualified on style grounds.

Sainsbury's Best London Porter - pretty good actually!Yes, very tasty. Avoid their Czech lager, though, it's rather a pale imitation of the proper stuff.
Butty Bach. (Wye Valley Brewery)
While I was cooking (and eating sliced jalapenos straight from the jar) I supped a bottle of Sainsburys Taste The Difference IPA. 5.9%, brewed by Marstons and very hoppy - probably my favourite type of beer.
The pinto bean enchilladas are in the oven, now I'm going to open a Blandford Flyer. Why did they rename it from Blandford Fly?
In response to Rhys, IPAs and their black brother (BIPA) seem to be bang on trend at the moment. Must track down some Magic Rock 8 Ball and see what the fuss is about.

Quite lovely.

Green & Blacks Hot Chocolate...... :P
At 12.53am I was drinking exactly the same hoping it would send me off to sleep. It's clearly worked.
(After twenty years of semi-skimmed, I've now gone back to full fat, full time. Calories be damned!)
It was exceedingly dry.
I had to force myself to finish the bottle.
Black Sheep, which is a pleasant enough ale, but is not a patch on Fuller's ESB. I don't think I've tasted a better bottled beer than ESB, with the exception of well-matured Eldridge Pope "Thomas Hardy" ale....
Is ESB bottle-conditioned?
I'm sure the label, in years gone by, described it as a bottle-conditioned ale, but I don't think it does any more.

As far as I know, ESB is still bottle conditioned. If not, I'll be very disappointed. I've not had it for a while though, tbh.

Not usually a lager type, but currently drinking "Chti" which is rather nice. Named after the dialect (and the pejorative / affectionate term, depending on your perspective, for the inhabitants of) the Nord-Pas-De-Calais.
On the advice of a dear friend, a mug of hot chocolate to help me sleep. Takes the place of a glass of malt.
Lemonade (diet, naturally)
Sometimes being teetotal is a real bummer, especially when I see pics of Belgian beers :'(
A pint of water but that's following a bottle of Tesco's Simply IPA (rather nice), a couple Appletinis and a couple of glasses of The Godfather (whisky and amaretto, biased towards the whisky). All tasty.

How was the Iris? I've never had that one but I've heard good things about it. It sounds intriguing.
The Kriek is a standard bona fide classic, of course. Can't go wrong there.

Innis & Gunn Spice Rum Finish Oak Aged Beer - given to me by a work colleague as a recommendation. Quite pleasant but at 7.4% a bit stronger than I my usual - nice as a winter warmer though.

Brunswick 50 Shades of Ale
For me, the Whitby Wobbler or the Ryburn. She went for the Bacchus.
I remember (bleerily) when Whitby Wobbler was made in Whitby.
It was available at my local (the previously mentioned One Eyed Rat in Ripon)
A couple of pints and you find out why it's called Whitby Wobbler....
Do you happen to know whether the 50 Shades came from the Brunswick pub/brewery in Derby?
Where did you find it?
And how did you find it?
All the beers you are scoffing sound excellent.... except I don't get your choice of lambics. Timmermans and Lindemans?
(Sorry, I'm a lambic snob) :P
Mikkeler stuff from Denmark worth a look, but not much of their range on that list.
Timothy Taylor's Landlord. I could do with a slightly larger pint to be honest.
Red wine.A Merlot & I'm now not entirely sober. ::-)

Just trying stuff I haven't before. Cantillion and Duchesse de Bourgogne are the extent of my experience so far. I guess I should try 3F's stuff (I've seen it on the shelf). Any other stuff I should look out?
TBH, there's no rhyme or reason behind my choices - actually, scratch that. I'm not really choosing. It's whatever I see at the bar.
BTW, I ride past Beer-ritz (http://www.beerritz.co.uk/)every other day. I suspect them being around may explain some of the availability locally. If there's something on their list (http://www.beerritz.co.uk/dept/beer-by-abv_d01270.htm) I really should try, do let me know.

Only about a week or more late...
Whilst in La Seu d'Urgell we found "The Cafe of the Witch" near our hotel (if you are ever in the area, look it up, it is brilliant!). they had a beer fridge, 6' high, like a Coke fridge but full of beer from all around Spain and Europe.
We (myself and Ham) enjoyed a few from this brewer:

They were all lovely, even the one that had a subtle hint of Elderflowers (not something I would normally like, but this was just the right amount of flowers in it).
The numerous bottles of red we consumed on that trip were all good too.

Jean Doussoux VSOP Cognac. Brought back from holiday (we were staying 3 miles from the producer, so I forced myself to go round and extensively taste their range of wares).
Very, very lovely.
I also have a bottle of their XO single cask which I plan to save for a while. I'm not sure how long I'll be able to resist opening it for though.

It's one of the best bottled bitters that I can remember having; generally I prefer lager from bottles (the opposite to my draft beer preference).
I learned about Butty Bach from this forum.
Thanks for that

Bloody Americans, discovering IPA, overhopping it, and making it trendy... ;) I hope tastes eventually come full circle and people (especially youngsters) will rediscover how delicious, smooth, and more balanced traditional British ales can be.
Geranium gin. But I'm supposed to leave it alone till the weekend. Bah.Explain plz?
I am sorry, but you are wrong, an IPA SHOULD be strong and hoppy.Tiermat. There are other types of British ale apart from IPA - that was the point of my post. Americans took IPA and redesigned it using fairly high alpha-acid, new-world citrussy hops, e.g., Galaxy, Cascade, Amarillo, from the start of the boil to flame-out. Building up a culture of their own, they call them quite rightly A(merican)PAs. We latched onto this American micro-brewing revolution, imported them and now highly hopped citrussy beers have become the new norm (Black IPAs for example). some of which just don't work and taste awful. Even Marston's Old Empire IPA adds american Cascade at the end and hops like these didn't exist at the time of the Raj. But thanks for telling us the story about how the Victorians used to whack in a ton of hops to keep the beer stable over long journeys (in the field it was watered down for the men - of course, the officers got the good stuff)!
IPA comes from the days of the Raj, where the troops stationed over there could do without their beer, and were unable to get the materials locally to make their own. A brew was invented that could withstand the long trip from UK to India on a tea clipper. To make it able to survive it needed to have a high alcohol content and lots of hops to prevent it going sour.
The stuff you get these days is a pale imitation. IPA should be, at least, 5%, not 3.4% FFS!

Weekend, fools. My wife predicts a precipitous slide into alcoholism if I deviate from path of red wine during the week. She's probably right. I am curator of a rather large collection of gins.
I quite like the American "double hopped" IPAs - Sierra Nevada Torpedo and some Goose something from Chicago I get from Tesco. I have a couple of bottles of Deuchars IPA waiting in the fridge for me tonight though.
Glenlivet. It can only improve my drafting skillz, right? All the most advanced and dedicated wheel suckers drink Glenlivet. That is what you meant, right?

And then I googled it to see how much it is to buy :o

A genuine Kriek is not sweet at all, rather with a sour-ish taste and a hint of cherry stones... An acquired taste.. The real stuff is usually wrapped in paper and is expensive.
I'm guessing your M£S version has aspartame or similar fake sugar?

Many krieks are sweetened (Bellevue, Timmermanns, Morte Subite) and not to my taste (I'm guessing the M&S one is probably one of these or something similar). Good sour lambics are better - Cantillon, 3 Fonteinen etc are fantastic. But not cheap. I think I bought a pint (I was thirsty) and it cost me £8.
I was in a cafe in Belgium the other day (ironically, for someone familiar with SE London, called Du Penge) and forced to sample a wide range of exotic beers. Barman's choice. Best one was apparently brewed by 'lady monks' or possibly 'ninja lady monks' though that was my suggestion.
Been unable to find that brew again though, so it could just have been a byproduct of my fermenting imagination.

Thanks for the information, Having drunk Bellevue quite a bit in Belgium it is my prefered Kriek I find Timmermans too sweet, the M&S one was sweeter than this as well as having very little flavour of anything. I was recommended Samuel Smiths Cherry Beer, will have to try & find a source, I am not too bother if it is a little sweeter but it must have some cherry flavour :)
Copious amounts of coffee, due to 1) it being week 11 and b) there be gremlins in them thar databases...

Last night I supped a pint of a Kona Brewery golden ale infused with pineapple. It sounds soooooo wrong but, after a day walking around in humid heat, it really hit the spot. Lovely stuff!
A good slug of Aldi's dark rum with Morrison's fresh pineapple juice (with a hint of lime) and topped up with Aldi's diet tonic. Refreshing.
Airport poured hoegaarden. At nearly £7 a pint. Strangely there is no perceptible improvement to the flavour. Maybe it is just me.
I don't think Merlot on it's own is v good.

I have convinced friends that a trip to Bamberg next summer is in order. Rauchbier hier komme ich!
(edit: on a slightly related note, noticing that it's brewed by Marston's is making me really hanker after a pink of Banks's Mild.)After spending 8 years in Wales when I was at university, if I never see Banks' beer again it'll be too soon - practically every bloody pub in Aberystwyth had Banks' Mild (or bitter, or both if you were really lucky) and Worthingtons. And in a lot of cases very little else.
I am drinking a pint of St. Austell Tribute. I am thinking how thin and insipid it is. This could be becaue recently I have been spoiling myself on ESB and Golden Pride, both from Fullers, which are much stronger, fuller-flavoured beers.
I have a number of bottles of a naturally-conditioned ale from St. Austell, called "Proper Job". It really is, compared to this, and I might follow up with one later.

I think that Banks's mild might have been the first beer I bought for myself. And I think it might have been about 60p a pint in the Brown Derby in Brum.
Went to first "beer club" night at my local beer shop, then on for some more. Feeling it today.

Blame my wife, she bought it for me. I got her a bottle of Ungava gin (http://www.ungava-gin.com/en/) because it looks a bit like reindeer pee, and so I feel is justly festive.
Fuller's ESB. ESB used to be one of my favourites. I'm sure it used to be bottle conditioned, which now it isn't, and I think the draught version is considerably better than the bottled. I definitely prefer Broadside now.
I'm doing a taste test between Scottish gins. Eden and Pickerings.

At least until my wife gets home.
The French do do some very good gins. G'Vine is splendid (I prefer Floraison, but Nouaison is worth a punt).

I buy the best five for the gin collection...

That's, erm, just one of the cupboards. There is some Hotel Chocolate Gin there, I can't remember the taste. I prefer gin-y gins. The worst one is some kind of Heston Blumenthal Earl Grey Gin. A present from someone, but it's too foul to contemplate. Banished to the bad spirit cupboard (yes, I have one of those, where the Tia Maria and Cherry Brandy live). Once a year I decide to make cocktails. The aim is to get someone drunk enough that they finish the Unicum.
A little rec this evening, my last bottle of Waxed Bat 2010, malbec blend
Ian (and anyone else who cares),
Tonight we're going to do this year's scale of kriek evil.
The contenders:

I'm only letting Pingu share because we've already had a couple and I couldn't get through this lot on my own.
The baseline is Oude Kriek Boon :P
Oh yus. For some reason I thought there was a 25, but evidently in the advent world Christmas is a disappointment. Need to sit down and work out the scores on the doors, because I scribbled a rank (OK, my hyper-organised wife did) on each so we could acquire the favourites for our collection.
My 2015 sloe gin is going down very nicely, thank you. I'm no gin connoisseur l, so it may not reach exacting Mrs Pingu standards. It's fruity, clear and delicious enough for me though.
Worked through more of the malt collection. Maybe not the best idea with a 10k road race tomorrow

TBH, I only let sloe gin past my lips for the 2nd time in October. The first time, about a squllion years ago, was before the craft gin revival had been invented, and I really didn't like it. So I'm not really a sloe gin connoisseur, and I've never had homemade stuff (dunno if we get sloes up here?)

Never been much of a fan either (flavoured gins in general – I'll accept things like the rhubarb gin because it's actual rhubarb in the botanicals rather than base gin with flavour added after the fact).
Tonight, as I'm staying in with my wife, the cats, a curry I've yet to make, and a box set of Back of the Future (too old to be schlepping into London to stand in the cold waiting for fireworks and watching people puke, and every where else involves weeks of travel and a taxi bill that would probably buy me a luxury flat in E8), I'll be doing some samplings from the back of the gin cupboard, and I've put my bottle of Tactical Nuclear Penguin in the fridge for a little bit of cooling. I'll switch off the internet before I get through that.
I thought "Kier Royal" was the Queen's bulders until I discovered yacf.
Just finished a bottle of CdR Cairanne and now having a Cotswold G&T.
Last week was mostly San Miguel (the proper Spanish verison) and Cruz Campo. I did however sample a few of Bushys Gibraltar Barbary Ale (http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/bushys-gibraltar-barbary-beer/34014/) and Casablanca Beer (http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/casablanca-casa-beer/9882/), bothe extremely nice. A good friend also poured a couple of hefty helpings of Smirnoff Gold cinnamon vodka liqueur (https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/18146/smirnoff-gold-cinnamon-vodka). Wow!
Visited my Mum on Sunday. Left her house with an unopened bottle of mead that was lurking in her cabinet. Apparently the brand has been out of production for 25 years or so.
Shall give it a try tonight (for scientific research purposes of course).
The gin festival proved to be a bad move. You've no idea how many bottles I have to buy now. Ironically, given a world of gin, my favourite turned out to be from Surrey (Silent Pool).Oh God, the gin festival. I went to the Guildford one. I felt like such an oik for the first hour but I soon warmed up.
Going to Craft Beer Rising hasn't helped my bank balance (or liver) either.
Sadly, No.1 Son discovered it and has polished off the bottle.sounds like you need to get a tantalus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tantalus_(cabinet)).
Git.
Pedro Ximenez sherry. I've never really done sherry before but as an experiment I bought some Amontillado at Xmas, as I do like dry white wine.
Didn't like it so gave it to my sherry drinking friend. She repaid me with a bottle of PX.
Nomnomnom.
It *is* incredibly sweet, but much more complex than similar sweetness of port I have had.
Again, nomnomnom :P
Tell us about the gin, ian. Enquiring minds need to know.

Scheibel Gin (http://www.brennerei-scheibel.de/produkte/futureoftaste/original/), finished in cherry brandy casks. I'm always been in mixed minds about barrel aged gins, but it is quite smooth and nommy. The some Bavarka gin (http://www.lantenhammer.de/destillate/bavarka/bavarka-bavarian-gin/). Based on potato spirit so the goes milky with tonic. And finally, some Bobby’s Schiedam Dry Gin (http://bobbysdrygin.com/), which I had in the ginvent calendar and rather liked.
Fearing being short of gin after a global societal collapse (you can stuff your canned goods, I'm not signing off with a spoonful of cold baked beans) I let the bloke in a Sevenoaks offy convince a rather me to buy some Haswell Gin (http://www.haswellgin.co.uk/) at the weekend. I resisted another local gin on the grounds it was £60 and I figured I could get it online cheaper and whilst I can discuss gin at length, owing to the fact we'd just trudged through an epic rainstorm I was standing in cold puddle of my own making (not literally) and really wanted to go home, but lordy can I remember the name now? No. It was sixty per cent boozeahol and created by some local chemists who had chucked in the rat race to distill hooch. So the knowledgable chap behind the counter explained. Further googling is required.
In bad news on the barrel-aging front, I've run out of both Pirate Noir and Bible Belt (well, it was a long weekend, and given that Bible Belt is based on Even More Jesus stout, I felt it would be what He wanted at Easter time, what better way to celebrate a painful crucifixion). And I can't find more!
Currently savouring a Talisker 18 yo, purchased from the distillery and being consumed a few miles away in front of a roaring open fire after a fine days walking on Skye. Living the dream.
Need a celebratory bottle of wine tonight for the 20th anniversary of my "Slapping the nut on mother Earth".
Must be fairly budget level, not too sweet and like being chilled to within 1 degree farenheit of slushy ice. No decent independent wine stockists local so it'll be a supermarket job.
Any suggestions?
Stella. It's rubbish.
Stella. It's rubbish.
Shouldn't you be in Arts and Entertainment?
Stella. It's rubbish. How could a country so renowned for excellent beer have got this one so wrong, and it sold so well? The Stella in UK is nowt like the proper stuff from Belgium. UK stuff " brewed" in Wales, Belgian stuff in Leuven.
As a rule never drink any foreign beer that isn't being made at its actual brewery. Nothing good will come of it.The Fosters sold in the UK is better than the Fosters sold in Australia.

Rhubarb gin. Bought, not made: by Warner-Edwards (https://www.theginboxshop.co.uk/victoria-s-rhubarb-gin.html), a recent Booths promotion. I was expecting something pale and delicate, but no: it's a rhubarb equivalent of damson gin, with a whacking great thump of rhubarb taste. In a good way. Very drinkable, dangerously so, with just a splash of ginger ale.

Yesterday: Magic Rock Salty Kiss, and some black IPA thingy.*
Today: Aperol spritz, and the Fuller's and Friends Fullers/Fourpure collaboration - a nice dry-hopped lager.
*Do we have a better name for these yet - dark hopped ale or something?
Well past its 'BBE' date.
I suspect the ingredient most likely to go off is the plastic bottle...
Some pretty rubbish Californian wine.
Well, someone's got to...
OMG! I just realised it's Ginvent tomorrow. My wife built a custom one for added awesomes and off-piste selections.Isn't the porch where you keep your beer? Doesn't sound like such a hardship :)
Plus, she's coming back from Madrid tonight – the airport usually has some awesome gin for the collection... she'd better bring gifts if she doesn't want to spend the night in the porch.
This place has very good prices for Portuguese wines. The following are all made by the chap who did yours.https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/search?orderby=price&orderway=asc&search_query=carlos+eduardo&submit_search=Search&p=2
I enjoyed this from M&S https://www.marksandspencer.com/quinta-de-fafide-estate-reserva-case-of-6/p/p21127281 and found the same stuff a lot cheaper on that site. https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/wines/4635-quinta-de-fafide-reserve-red-2016-5609851524007.html?search_query=Quinta+de+Fafide&results=6
The website didn't like Safari, but when I ordered a case the delivery was fairly prompt. Must order some more before Brexit :(
Public Service Announcement. Highland Park 12 year old single malt is on offer at the Co-op for £17.25 per bottle. I may stock up on a few !
No more cheap Van Ryns so tonights tipple is Carlos Primero Gran Reserva. It's like drinking Christmas cake :P
Life's too short to drink new world wines.
Something from Macedonia. It is really lovely. Heavy, dark, fruity, 14% and about £6 a bottle. Waitrose, of course.
I had some Corbieres last night. It's a long time since I had any. The last bottle I bought was such a disappointment, but this one was better (£7.50 from the Co-op). Still not a patch on the house version I had in a restaurant in Carcassonne 25+ years ago. How much of the flavour (perhaps in your memory) is down to where you were and who you were with, do you think? I'm going to say up to 100%
Two new bottles of gin arrived today from the Wessex Distillery:Thanks for that! I couldn't resist a gin with my name on it. It's very good.

Hipsters BRWKTPRJCT — BRUCE 6.1% NEW ZEALAND IPA:facepalm:
Bruce is a special IPA made with 3.42kg of dry hops per barrel of beer. The hops we used are a blend named Bruce, so how could we not call the beer that!
I notice that the larger Morrisons are now stocking a range of 7-8% unfined DIPAs in 440ml cans. This is tonight's. It's pretty good.
We have a box from Vocation, which is very nice, but some of them are indeed brain-punchingly hefty brews.
The Cloak + Dagger stuff was also very good, not a brewery I'd encountered before, but some find hoppy stuff. I also found a case of Verdant, ho ho, in the porch. I am very much missing The Experiment (the taproom collab between Verdant and Pressure Drop).
Those northern bastards are now trying to push me some barrel-aged stuff. Must. Not. Click. Buy. Too late.
Drinking a Brewdog Duopolis – an oat cream DDH IPA at a modest 4.7%. Very nice. There's a place called the Other Half Brewing in Brooklyn that I like to frequent, the do a load of oat cream IPAs, hazy beers for hazy nights, the last time I was there (remember travelling...) I don't think they had anything under 7.4%. My wife got carded on the way in which made her really happy. I'm sure we were the oldest people in the taproom. We're getting on to being a fine vintage.
The Vocation Coconut black IPA (11%!!) is very good, think they're sold out of that just now. I have 1 left.
Their "Life and Death" is a very nice beer. 330ml cans too, which I much prefer to the 440ml or pints.
I'm not a great fan of the stouts that taste like someone liquidized a cake.
Beers come and go in terms of popularity. I mean if you are offended by Guinness, just think back to that utterly inexplicable era in the late 80s when Newcastle Brown was all the rage.
Im sure that champers is generally overpriced and Im on a quest for fizz thats both value and quality.
Enjoying a pre dinner glass of Bellavista - Franciacorta Alma Gran Cuvee Brut purchased from the best deli in Edinburgh, Valvona & Crolla.
Pouilly Fume.
Daughter #1 bought a flat in Dalmeny St before lockdown so its a bit of Edinburgh Ive rediscovered (was based in Blenheim Place for a year) and Ive enjoyed a couple of said lunches. Its a bit of a cliche but the cafe at the back of the shop is a real hidden gem.Enjoying a pre dinner glass of Bellavista - Franciacorta Alma Gran Cuvee Brut purchased from the best deli in Edinburgh, Valvona & Crolla.
V&C is 2 minutes walk from our pad in Embra, and is a major source of our food and drink!
In happier times, it also has a nice cafe for lunch, where the waitress has already written my order on her pad before asking me!

We've generally gone off prosecco and tend to drink crémant when we fancy fizz - plenty of different ones around and I'm sure that your favoured wine merchant will have their own preferences (do you have an opinion on Little Rascal?) but in terms of readily available ones we come back to the TtD Crémant de Loire and Prodiguer Crémant De Bourgogne from Sainsbury's, and the Cuvée Royale Crémant de Limoux from Waitrose. Years ago we also tried Roche Lacour Crémant de Limoux at the cave, then were pleased to find we could restock from Laithwaites.
I think the Dublin thing was true at one time. In the late 80s I often drank in the Half Moon just down from Archway, which, as well as staying open beyond midnight because it had a music licence, also served Dublin Guinness. I drank vast quantities whilst singing along to Republican songs. Good Times.

Even average beer tastes OK in a decent pub.
Which is fine. One of my gripes with Camra is that they rate pubs exclusively on the quality of the beer. When I was actively involved in my local branch, I would get quite dismayed at some of my colleagues who would come to meetings and drone on for hours with their reports of all the pubs they had visited in the past month, all of which sounded like utterly soul-destroying experiences. Yeah, the cellarman knew how to keep a decent pint, but spending any time in there would suck the life out of any enjoyment you got from drinking it.
I suspect citoyen can guess what it is without even manipulating the link :P
I think the focus on beer quality makes sense; what people want from a pub varies so much that you're never going to be able to give a blanket recommendation

On the 'craft' beer thing... yes, indeed. It's a tricky one. I agree with the principle of supporting cask beer as something worth treasuring. However, one of my two personal favourite local watering holes only serves keg beer. But it's always excellent keg beer. (It's also run by lesbians, which I know would cause all sorts of problems for some of my local Camra branch members.)
The point being that in the 80s Guinness was brewed in London and was shit.
Cobra beer has only ever been brewed in London, hasn't it? And it has always been shit.
Cobra beer has only ever been brewed in London, hasn't it? And it has always been shit.
I don't think it's being brewed in the UK per se that makes these lagers shit, it's the fact that ye olde original brewery has been bought up by one of the massive global operators and the recipe reduced to industrial lagerpop, more a marketing exercise than something you would actually want to drink for enjoyment.
Brewed under licence, so doesn't even mean that ye olde brewerye has even been bought up.
then they got bought out by Anheuser-Busch InBev
Though, for the record, Greene King IPA is probably one of the worst things I've ever tasted.
.
Genuinely surprised to learn Cobra has authentic Indian origins. I could have sworn it was entirely ersatz Indian beer concocted by an English brewery marketing department. Maybe I'm thinking of something else. Do people in India actually drink lager with their dinner?
There's a grain of truth here. It was a British Asian who wanted a lager that was a bit more suited to drinking with food. It was brewed in Bangalore. I quite liked it.
Do people in India drink lager with their food. Well, that depends. Sometime yes. The Sikhs prefer whisky. I've had Kingfisher served in a teapot into teacups because local sensibilities forbade drinking in public.
Just not your thing.
I had a can of Brewdog Light Speed the other night, not expecting very much but it was surprisingly flavoursome.
Port and Ginger wine, if you must know.
Some reds are, frankly, better chilled. Mostly the cheaper ones.Have you got a recipe for that?
I'm currently on the home-made ginger and lemon cordial. No added sugar, and no booze in it either, so all very virtuous, but it does have quite a powerful kick none the less. I used a *lot* of ginger
Have you got a recipe for that?
Some reds are, frankly, better chilled. Mostly the cheaper ones.
I've just made a litre of this, including a bunch of mint leaves.Have you got a recipe for that?
Well, kind of…
First time I made it I improvised with what I had in the fridge, and liked the results, so I’ve subsequently tried to refine it into a recipe by measuring the quantities. Latest batch was:
250g fresh root ginger, peeled and finely chopped/grated - I’ve been upping the ginger quantity each time, this is *very* gingery
1 large lemon, zest and juice thereof
Put the ginger and lemon zest in a pan with 800ml cold water, put lid on pan, bring to boil then simmer gently for 25 minutes. Take off heat and leave to cool, which will take an hour or so (keep the lid on the pan throughout to prevent losing too much to evaporation). When it’s cool, stir in the lemon juice. Then strain into a bottle - I have some 750ml flip-top bottles and this makes enough to fill one bottle. Keep it in the fridge - it doesn’t have a long shelf life, but it might not last long enough for that to be a problem anyway.
I think it’s very much one of those suck it and see recipes - adjust quantities as you see fit. I’ve also tried it with two lemons but felt it was too lemony for my liking. YMMV. Serve diluted to taste (just don’t drink it neat unless you want to burn your throat). I don’t make it with sugar in deference to my wife but if you want a bit of sweetness, dilute it with apple juice (the cheap shit made from concentrate is fine for this) - a mix of apple juice and fizzy water, plus a squeeze of lime juice, is my favourite combo.
I was also thinking of trying it with mint - maybe throw in a bunch of mint leaves to steep when you take it off the heat. The possibilities are endless!

Methinks it might go well with tonic water.
I shall report back once it has cooled/been strained.
Bit OT, but I'm after suggestions for a good beer that fulfills the following criteria:
1) The bottle size must be at least 750ml
2) Have catchy label
3) Not be of clear glass
It's to convert into a lamp for a mate, so I'll be drinking the contents 🙂

My first Barolo. Delicious. So was mine. Many years ago. Unfortunately , since then , I have had too many bottles that were past their best. Beware supermarket Barolo.
I'm on some DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL painkillers for an injury so I've tried some 0% stuff - I really can't tell the difference between real Leffe Blond and Leffe Zero Blond (Doom Bar Zero is awful)
Old Peculier. I first had this back in the early 80's, it's a pleasant brew, but I'm sure it used to be stronger & have bits in it.....Theakstons? Thought it was 5-6%

Tesco are selling Banrock Station wine in flat recycled plastic bottles. I see this as having advantages:
you can carry two plastic bottles home for the same weight as a glass one
they fit sideways in the fridge door - so two bottles in the space of one
I would say these bottles will be a big hit for camping trips too

It's turned into my second-fave 0.0%, but lags a long way behind Leffe. Which in Morrison's case they had not got.

Miss von Brandenburg, who used to guzzle Hefeweizen to the nth degree back in the day, is most uncomplimentary about the Erdinger which has put me off trying it.
Erdinger is the world's largest wheat beer brewery...
The Erdinger with ethanol in it is perfectly acceptable but Miss von Brandenburg says the alcohol-free version “tastes like Malzbier”.
