Nasty training accident - that's some dent in the back of the (stationary) bus...

Never mind missing "much of the current season", that could be a career-stopper.

ETA: team was on TT bikes, even more headlong than usual. <wince>

Is it just me, or do the Sky/Ineos have more training accidents than other teams ?

Amy Pieters has also had a nasty crash at a training camp. She’s been now flown by a specialist back to hospital in the Netherlands.
There seem to have  have been a lot more trying camp crashes then usual this year

I wonder if the law of averages means that with reduced racing calendars more crashes will occur proportionately in training, because more riding will be training.  I can only imagine Geraint Thomas isn't riding at all?

I wonder if it is the intensity with which riders are training, possibly combined with a greater focus on numbers.  I know that when I was training for some good times in TTs, or at the point when the elastic is about to snap on a club run, my perceptions are reduced (e.g. just to the wheel in front) and so I am less likely to be aware of potential dangers.  (That's one reason I take things a bit easier now, except for the annual club hill climb)

The other factor, IMHO, is that racing is much more competitive now.  20 years ago, the first two hours of most stage races (except the TdF) was a case of piano, let the break go down the road.  Now teams are trying something every hour of every race.  And everyone has access to top-level science, so they are squeezing more performance out of every rider - again that puts pressure to train to the margins, learning to descend faster, getting more aero on a TT bike, taking a more aggressive line through that cobbled turn....

Tom Pidcock went on record yesterday as saying it was down to the more and more extreme aero positions and geometry of modern TT bikes - and certainly they seem quite unstable and prone to wind effects.

Couple of fair posts, there.

Pidcock didn't say anything about the bike being more unstable, he just said that it was that the position made it difficult to see!

I read your post, and thought, nah, disagree (obv, there is the Geraint Thomas factor) then I saw this !

Given Bernal's nationality and where the accident happened, has the bus driver been shot yet?

He's posted on Instagram. 20 broken bones. Includiy vertebrae and ribs. Two punctured lungs, and a missing tooth.

That's gonna be one hell of an impressive comeback if he rides a grand tour again.

I'd not put much money on Bernal making an effective return to the pelican after that lot, having seen the likes of Froome and Beloki try and not succeed terribly well.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of rule change re TT bikes and/or public roads now.

Maybe specifying how low handlebars can be wrt saddles, or simply forbidding their use on public roads.

In which country is this related to? Public roads are used in professional races (as far as I know).
Ban time-trials in pro racing? I'm not sure that would go down well.

Exactly.  Pro-race time trials have lower bus coefficients.

I was thinking along similar lines, but Bernal is younger than Froome and Beloki were when they came off so we may be pleasantly surprised.  I hope we are, it would be rather sad to see his career curtailed in this way.

Did the marshals disqualify him for riding head-down?  Sadly, this sort of accident is not unusual in TT circles.
