Advice please.
« on: 22 May, 2008, 08:12:51 pm »
I am doing the Paris - Roubaix Sportive in two weeks time.

My steed of choice is normally my fixed but would the pave`(55 kms of it) cause me grief without the ability to freewheel when required or am I being a wuss?  :-[

Yes!

I would also suggest that riding fixed might make life more difficult both for you, and those around you in the peleton.

The way to ride pave is to roll the biggest gear you can whilst letting the front end of the bike find its own way. Getting that gear on fixed would seriously compromise you in other parts of the parcourse.

Personally I would go for 48/53 with a 12-21 block.

Off the point a bit, but I would also have 25 ml tyres at least, and 2 layers of bar tape.

Despite this

Did I catch that right...?

:)

I agree with Giropaul. For that ride I'd use gears.

This isn't just a thousand to one shot. This is a professional blood sport. It can happen to you. And it can happen again.
