Simon Harmer took 8 Hampshire wickets in the first innings, and is currently on on 5 in the second. Essex are probably marginal favourites - Hants need 91 to win with 3 wickets left.

Essex eventually won by 12 runs and the Hampshire captain was very unhappy about the manner in which the Essex fielders requested ball changes a few times until they found on that suited them.

Meanwhile, in the test match, That Lad Bairstow has been at it again...

Do I dare follow the test tomorrow, in the certain knowledge that me paying attention to it will have an effect on the movement of the tectonic plates and England will collapse ignominiously?

The idea that your watching or not watching the test tomorrow could have any effect on the game is preposterous. It's irrational, infantile, superstitious nonsense.

But, just in case, could you not watch it please.

Watch Wales playing rugby instead.
It is simpler than it looks.

Just a peep maybe. But I'd be happier if you left it 20 mins or so.

Number of Essex players in England team... 0     Division 1
Number of Durham players in England team... 3  Division 2

I can't help but think that these statistics are connected.

Perhaps now is the time to quote what a former Yorkshire and England opener, and TMS 'expert'  said a month ago after the first test against New Zealand.

Quote
The best example was Jonny Bairstow’s innings. He scored 16 runs off 15 balls and played like it was a T20 match. It was dreadful. For the state of the game, it was awful. He had just come from two months of T20 in India straight into a Test match and yet we expected him to think like a Test batsman.
Scoring centuries and winning matches isn't test cricket, apparently. More draws needed.

Joe Root is a better Test player for not playing Twenty20. All he trains for is Test cricket. You never see Root play the scoop, ramp, or any fancy shots. He doesn’t need to because he is bloody good at all the orthodox shots.
I'd like to think that Joe Root saw this quote, and since then has included a reverse ramp/scoop for 6 in every century.

The article which quotes him is here:  https://cricketaddictor.com/cricket-news/eng-vs-nz-jonny-bairstow-played-like-it-was-a-t20-match-it-was-dreadful-geoffrey-boycott/

Gloucestershire elected to bat v Essex at Chelmsford and were skittled for 136. Essex 34-1 in reply...

Astonishing second test between Sri Lanka and Australia in Galle.  Astonishing because it was played at all given the situation there.  But also astonishing in that Australia were beaten easily - maybe wanting to get an early plane?

Well, Surrey seem to be heading for the County Championship, having reduced Essex, who had been showing some decent form lately, to 91-6.

In non-Essex news, Sam Northeast, who plays for Glam. (southwest), scored 410 not-out.

Yes, really astonishing:  Leicestershire score nearly 600, Glamorgan nearly 800 and managed to avoid the obvious accusations of killing the game stone-dead by bowling out the team that scored nearly 600 for only about 200 in only two sessions.

That's impressive.

In 2004, Essex scored 642 in the first innings against Glamorgan but still lost. That's the highest first innings score to be on the losing side. The current match is number 12 in terms of first innings.

Essex are posting a monster first innings total v Somerset: 325/3 at the moment, with the not-out batsmen on 155 and 79. But, sadly, Essex were outplayed by Surrey last week and I can't see anyone stopping them from taking the county championship this year.

Collapsed to 505, I see, which is pretty poor at only 3 an over.  Still, as we know, anything can happen!
