Bloody Hell ! Who says desk jobs are not dangerous !
« on: 27 March, 2014, 09:09:35 pm »
I just sat down at my desk at home and my nice adjustable chair collapsed under me, chucking me onto the floor!

No major damage, just slightly shaken.  My back feels like it might be complaining in the morning though, that could spoil my weekend in Brussels!

Sadly it's my own property so I can't sue my employer.  And as I bought it (new) from an Ebay retailer approx 5 years ago I suspect it's well out of warranty!

Time to test out the anaesthetic benefits of Belgian beer.

Yikes - looks nasty, hope you're all right for your trip!

Desks are definitely dangerous workplaces. One place I worked, I saw a colleague drop a pen and it rolled under the desk; on picking it up she hit her head on the underside of the desk, prompting the floor first aider, then the H&S rep, then, as she was feeling dizzy, an ambulance, and finally ten weeks off work followed by a phased return over several weeks. And they tell us we should wear helmets for cycling!

Kim wasn't responsible, was she? I hope your back doesn't cause you too much grief.

When I started working for HMCE, gas-cylinder swivel chairs were just becoming popular. Having just left teaching, where buying a pot of Marvin Medium would blow the annual budget, I recall the sense of indignity when the computer division splashed out £5000 on chairs for staff. However, I digress: there was a maximum recommended weight limit and my mate Kevin always kept his steel-framed chair. I was a sylph-like 15 stones in those days so I just about qualified. From memory the limit was 100kg.

Ouch - glad you're okay.

I work in the engineering and construction industry and our safety figures tell us that we hurt *way* more people in our lovely, safe offices than we do in the field-  where there are all sorts of interesting ways to get maimed and killed to DETH.

What on earth would Kim have been doing in my flat that would have caused a chair to collapse........ ;-)

I can't see any hacksaw marks, and Kim would probably have sabotaged me with electrickery!

are you sure you hadn't fitted a light or a mudguard to it? from the cycling experts this can cause stems to break:

Feed the bodies to the cats/poultry/selected cow-orks. Use the bones to make bike frames and corsets. Whales are endangered, humans aren't. S'easy!

Over 2 hours late into Brussels. This gets me a free return ticket :-)
A lovely sunny day, I spent a leisurely hour walking to the hotel, not really knowing where I was going. Just going to freshen up before going out again.

My office chair cost £800*. It's very good for spinning on. Since I don't like roller coasters that's about as much of a thrill ride as I can take. The cat likes a spin too. I occasionally pretend I'm Captain Kirk. Thataway, Mr Sulu. Admittedly my version of Star Trek is a bit odd, since the Enterprise is crewed entirely by cats and stuffed mustelids.

*I've no idea why it costs so much. I'm pretty sure I could spin on a cheaper chair, but the mothership supplied it (or rather the catalogue, I just pointed). I've checked and it doesn't appear to have special features or an engine.

And to round off the day my electric toothbrush is dead. Something must have pressed its button and it's buzzed it's way to exhaustion whilst in my rucksack.

The gig was wonderful!

My office chair would have cost £800 if I hadn't bought it on eBay. It's a Hermann Miller Aeron. Well worth the money.

Standard issue at my place - and I love mine. If I could fit one under my jumper I'd have one at home too  ;)

or that you need a Brooks saddle grafted onto the chair shaft?

That was a £99 Aeron "homage". :-)

I have 2 Conquests, my favourite Brooks.    Wonderful & comfy.

They'd have to pry them from my cold, dead buttocks etc

In my office there isn't room to spin a chair, cat or no cat.

Anouar Brahem?  I may just be ever-so-slightly jealous.  Worth all the transport and toothbrush issues then?.
