I had an interview and a portrait sitting with the amazingly talented Ásgeir Trausti last night before his gig at the Union Chapel in Islington.  Shot this portrait with a bit of ringflash magic:

The gig was pretty much completely in the dark, so I was well glad of my new camera - it really is The Prince of Darkness.  This was at ISO 3200, 1/50 at f/1.4 on a 35mm lens:

And this also at ISO 3200 with a 200mm at f/2.8 and a totally hail-mary shutter speed of 1/40th.  Thank fuck for VR:

Charlotte, those pics are lovely.  It's really difficult to get good gig photos, and that environment sounds particularly difficult.

I should get down to the Union Chapel one of these days, Mark Kozelek played there not so long ago but it wasn't possible, what with w***.

Yesterday, at the BB parade for their end of session. Most of what I shot was video to help out a film maker working on a community project (Lochee Life on FB).

Now with added lights!

I dunno how convincing this is, but I spent far too long experimenting in Photoshop to get it this far. Hopefully it's enough to fool the casual observer. The more astute will notice there are no blues lit on the near side rear section behind the cab.

Lights are not so much of an issue as the trees in the sidewindow and the reflecting in front windscreen.

Err... it's a location shot. If my intent was to make it look like a studio shot I would have outlined it completely, cloned out the tree in the side window and removed the reflections. Possibly done something with the mud on the nearside front wheel too!

Just a bimble along the canal as restoration works take place here in Stroud.

NME-tastic, Charlotte. Isn't gig photography a dark art?

I took Derpy up to Fernworthy on't moors, and while it was too breezy for video that wasn't horriballs (experiments at stabilisation in post may be forthcoming), there was a snap or two that worked:

Fernworthy Stone Circle by andygates, on Flickr

The shot I wanted - an aerial plan of the circle - was thwarted by pesky wind.  Might have a go at cleaning lens distortion and tiling a bunch of framegrabs...
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

A little sight seeing and some casual shooting around Birmingham today.

Obligatory photo of the Selfridges building:

A couple from the new Central Library. First visit, a real iconic building and definite must see:

And the interior is equally interesting:

On the 7th floor of the Central Library is a viewing platform:

Finally, a quick grab with the 85mm at f/1.4

Lovely leisurely day out, even caught some sun. Highly recommended :)

For once...  yes!  (yesterday)

I shot 8 sheets of 5x4 film, 2 sheets per 'picture', at once doubling my total for the whole of 2013.
In amongst the mud on the shoreline of the Fal estuary creeks.  (N of Trelissick)

Reflections were quite bright, so i think I'll pick up some pyrocat type dev (Tanol maybe) and do one sheet for each view in this to rescue the highlights as well as the usual DDX or D76. This may be extraneous detail on a cycling forum

No images to post just yet...

Nope - ex large format photographer (and moderator of the large format forum on photo.net!) here.

There will always be highlight detail on bw negs - just keep burning!  The important thing to avoid is under exposing the shadows.  I am a great fan of evaluating the tone range of a scene with a Pentax spot meter and then placing the darkest area I want shadow detail on the lowest zone the film/dev combo will take.  I favour Fp4/id11 and this allows placing the darkest shadows on zone 2.

Went out with some friends doing "street photography" (yesterday). I'm not really a people person, so interpreted this loosely.

Well, with the white 'framing', they stand out badly.

Nevertheless Jakob's point is a good one. The tree reflections draw the eye and look ridiculous.  Sorry mate but if you're going to do 1998 local camera club competition style photoshopping you have to get the detail right!  :)

NME-tastic, Charlotte. Isn't gig photography a dark art?

In both senses of the word, most definitely.

I think the next time it gets that dark, I may use a speedlight on AF-assist only mode so I can nail down my focus a bit more predictably.  When you're shooting in light that low, you're forced to use some pretty thin DOF and getting it sharp is a bugger.

This works extremely well if your subject is fairly static. If it worked along side AF-C, that would be the icing on the cake, although seeing the projected cross hairs for a longer period might unnerve some people :D

Not out so much as into the kitchen. I've finally taken the plunge and decided to learn how to do flash lighting. First go at something more than bounce-flash, having read the first bits of strobist 102.

(Once I'd worked out that my radio release is good for either shutter or flash but not both.)
