Camping weekend September brichcoombe farm near Wantage .
« on: 19 July, 2018, 04:55:01 pm »
I am thinking of spending a weekend at brichcoombe farm campsite in September and am wondering if any of you lovely fourmites might like to join us  . Dates to be decided   :)
the  nearest railway stations appear to be Hungerford or the infamous Didcot   :)

Or ride along the Ridgeway and fall down the hill.  ;D

Provisional interest subject to the usual caveats etc.

Sounds like fun.

I think I am just going to have to "lump it" if there is no electricity supply for my machine. I'm going to Scotland on the sleeper on Monday night and apparently there are no 3-pin plugs in the cabins.

Could be up for this if I can fit it in around life and ALC meets on the 1st and last weekends.

OK so I am no good at setting up polls on here but we need to work out the most popular date in September. ☺. I will contact the campsite as soon as we have a date   :)

There are several different fields. Some have lecky some don't. But showers are in a field without electricity.

We are interested (I'll tell clarion!) if it isn't the first or last weekends.

I think this event will have to go ahead without me.

Jan and I are off to Austria from 3rd-13th September, I am planning a few more days on the Pembs coastal path from 23rd-27th, and Jan is off to Yarndale (a Skipton-based wool-fest) for the weekend of 28th.

FWIW, preference for not the 21st here, as that's a FNRttCOxford and some silly bike racing.

We probably need a ruling on whether Silverdale is likely to happen...   :-\

Y'know, it's not that long ago that Hungerford was pretty damn infamous itself. (For very sad reasons of course :( )

Anyways ... the people of Didcot will welcome you all. And may pop along :)

Wantage actually has station platforms but nothing's stopped there for 50 years.

I'm in if it's the 15th or 29th (it will probably be cold by the last date).

FWIW I think Wantage is 'a campsite too far' TBH. A 500 mile round trip (give or take) plus  losing a weekend's trading isn't conducive to relaxation.

Also Silverdale on the original W/E suggested isn't doable as Mrs. Torslanda- of the horned helmet and heavy metal breastplate - has a Scout Leaders' pissup outdoor course the weekend of the 21st.

It is perhaps a bit too far for those of us who are oop north.....

So I think we should get off our arses & organise something up here....    I've been on multiple weekends organised by forum friends but have never arranged one myself :-[   That's an early New Years Resolution then...

Silverdale has been mentioned,  there are some nice places within an easy-ish ride of Preston or Lancaster (Dent ?).    I've camped here twice & it's a nice site (but no pub) http://www.churchhousemelverley.co.uk   https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g3464118-d3461484-Reviews-Church_House_Campsite-Melverley_Shropshire_England.html , not too far from Birmingham, Crewe, Chester or Liverpool.

I think that's the site that Jan and I stayed at when it was Very Wet Indeed. Lovely art of the orkd at the southern extremity of the Pennine Way.

No wifi and hardly any phone signal. We would have to sit in a circle looking introvertedly at our feet.

Edale makes a very good camping venue because of the railway.

Cumbria, I think. Or N. Lancashire.

There is more than one Silverdale (see Wikipedia), but this one next to Morecombe Bay was the proposed venue for Long Itch on tour.  Sadly, following online criticism after the May18 Long Itch, PB has no interest in any more cat herding of campers.  :'(

I have spoken to pb  over the phone and he says that due to the pricing at silverdale  the minimum number of people needed would be 12 and payment would be needed in advance. He said he would be prepared to organise if there is sufficient interest. ..
Is the 15th of September okay for the birch coombe. Meet. ? . If so I  will phone the  site during the week and make sure that they have room for us.  :)
