The only weekend in December I can't do is the one with Saturday 17th in it.  We have our shop Christmas Do which is where the flesh pots of Colchester get a proper bashing by Donna, Sacha and The Current Mrs R, my role is to sweep up what's left - heaven help me  ::-)

Returning to the yacf bash, I don't really mind what we do or where we go, I'm easy.  Yes, if I can bring my Carradice Barley Bluetooth sound system if requested and assuming Poundland carry their usual Xmas range of tat I can rock up in fancy dress.

I'd vote for a Jalsa Ghar curry but not if it means the consorte of musicke isn't there. Although doesn't the Queen Victoria do real food as well?

There is a Travelodge in Dunmow at the other end of the town near the A130 which might be suitable.

A clear majority for the Jalsa, but some objectors to accomodate/persuade.

Fancy dress, but of course!

3rd December ok?

Meeting somewhere for drinks east-ish of Dunmow on/near the Flitch Way - if riding the FW is a 'serious' suggestion - Braintree/Rayne/Notleys/Fuller Street?

Camping/rough stuff touring in the New Year?

Thats the plan as it stands, then [subject to modification.]

Wait a bit and see.

I'll check out the availability of the Jalsa Ghar next.

3rd December ok?
That's one of my Father-Son weekends which at this early stage counts me out, it was a 50/50 chance!
(unless some shuffling of weekends can be organised my end)

We'll never be able to get back & party in Essex that evening.  :'(

Looking back through the thread, the likely participants for 3rd December are, provisionally:

Auntie Helen
bobb
Bloomers100
Mike
Oaky
Oscar's Dad
Regulator
Tokamak
Tomsk
Wowbagger

And possibly Ham and Huggy

And fboab, we'd love you to drop by for a Christmas drink on the way back from your audax, even if you can't make the meal.

And also some significant others, so maybe a table for 20?
I'll make a booking and hassle you all for a firmer commitment in about a month???

The current plan is to have a Reindeer Kushbo at the Jalsa Ghar in Great Dunmow on Saturday the 3rd of December.

There will certainly be a ride to Dunmow.  I'm thinking about some mild off-road (byway between white notley and great notley, followed by the flitch way).  There may be pub stops involved.

http://www.touristnetuk.com/south-east-england/essex/camping/great-dunmow/default.asp shows a pub in Broxted which has camping facilities allegedly. The postcode places it in Molehill Green which is about 6 miles from Dunmow. Worth a call?

I'm in.

If the Flitch way is anything like it was the only other time I've ridden it (MUDDY!) - it's MTB for me!

Oh - put me on the list...
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

JohnT

I don't have an MTB, so I'll either be riding a hybrid city-bike commuter thingy (with 28c Marathon+ tyres)  if I'm feeling sensible, or a fixed gear folding thing (with fairly slick 32c tyres on it) if I'm feeling silly.

The Flitch way and the byway that I'm thinking of can both easily be done on most bikes.  (Although I'm not sure about my fixed ;) - that might involve an "off" or two).

I'm pretty sure chief's done the Flitch (and worse) on his tourer before now, and I think the last time we did it on a mid-Essex evening ride, AH rode it on her recumbent trike with no difficulties (apart from the plank crossing where racks had to be manhandled :)).

If it does tip it down with rain in the lead-up then I'll probably chicken out and take a road-based route, mainly so as not to be too covered in mud in the Jalsa.  Otherwise, the Flitch surface isn't usually too claggy.

That's not entirely right, Oaky. Well, I did have issues at the plank bridge that would have been OK on a normal bike but I also felt the general surface wasn't brill for me - too much deep leaf litter which makes traction rather difficult. If i had known of an alternative, road-based route back I would have taken that (didn't have my Garmin with maps then).

In weather like now I'd probably do it, it'd be dry enough, but not sure about December.

I have found us a campsite: Sewards Hall Farm, Stebbing Rd, Felsted, CM6 3LQ. It has loos and showers etc. I have made a provisional booking for 6 small tent pitches, I said I would confirm exact numbers nearer the time or cancel entirely if a better plan comes along.

I was toying with the idea of setting off around noon on Saturday and heading towards the site via pubs, bunging the tent up and then riding on to Gt Dunmow at the appointed hour. Then aim to get back home early afternoon on Sounday. How does this sound to others?
