adding a white border to image

What's the easiest way to do this, in e.g. GIMP 2?

I increase the canvas size in Photoshop - I'm sure there's an equivalent in the Gimp.  Hold on, I'll go and have a look on the other machine..

Hmm.  Editing the canvas size is more complex in the Gimp.  John's method is super simple though!

I can draw a rectangular sheet but can't work out how to fill it in with white/black.

There's a border colour option box.  Have you got he latest Gimp?

Set 'delta value on colour' to 1
Click on the Border Colour box and set HTML notation to ffffff.

(GIMP 2.6.7)
