Action Photographs
« on: 07 September, 2011, 11:49:55 am »
Anyone shot any sports and action photography?
I've done a few football tournaments recently and caught a few cracking shots.

Unfortunately most the images get handed over and there's not time on the day to obtain copies, so I've not got many to show you. I love the effect of shooting on astroturf.

I'm shooting at Pedal for Scotland on Sunday. Not sure whether I'll manage to take a few shots and hold onto them - anyone here taking part?

Action rather than sports, my son was riding around the farm and I thought that if I could get a picture with some movement in it, it would look good -

Won't somebody think of the hamsters!

I've never had a lens long enough for team sports.  I do have some good shots of mountain bikers at the 1994 Grundigs; I think the best one used a 35mm lens and I was lying on the grass.

Alternatively if you're impatient, you can just get a camera that shoots 40fps. Makes capturing the right moment a bit easier.

I used to do photography for a couple of American football teams (I used to play for one of them) back in the days of film.

I also did a bit of motocross photography, but that was just as an enthusiast and for photo exhibition work - prefocus the 400mm lens and press the shutter when the engine note is right and hopefully the bike will be 30ft in the air and in shot when the shutter opens.  ::-)

I've been getting to grips with my new gear by going to a few evening race meetings at Crystal Palace, it's good for high speed, low light stuff:

And then there are the photos that I took at Herne Hill which I posted elsewhere:

Velodromes are great for photos because you always know exactly where the cyclists will be - on the black line.

Photos of cyclists in pain always look about twelfty times better in black and white.  It's the Rapha effect.

Indeed, but you cannot always get pink bits showing.

There's a clear difference between Sports photography (sometimes just documenting the existence of a participant)  and (Sports)Action photography (capturing a sense of the sport, sometimes at the expense of the identity of the participant.)

Many of the above capture the participant but not the sense of action.

To my eyes, the following (just a sample) seem to capture a sense of the action

Steve, I'm using Canon stuff. Eos 5DMkII with an EF24-70 2.8L USM and an EF100-400 4.5/5.6L IS USM.

The telephoto zoom is mind bogglingly good, it's got me hankering after a better body!

IMO this culture is evident in the womens game at professional level.
Conspicuous by it's absence are many of the aspects of "sportsmanship" displayed by male players.
(based on watching Sky Sports coverage of the womens teams of Arsenal,West Ham et al)

Personally I think they should have a standing 8 count for injuries in soccer. If you can't be back on your feet within 8 seconds then you should be off the pitch for treatment till the ref allows you back on at the next break in play.

That should sort out the play acting..
