Biting my tongue
« on: 24 July, 2011, 07:07:21 pm »
Literally, not metaphorically.

Every so often I wake myself up because I've bitten my tongue - and it bloody hurts! This afternoon a very fine siesta on the sofa was rudely interrupted by the backmost right molars carrying out a successful pincer movement on my poor old lingua.

Does anyone else suffer from this affliction?

Yes. I get this too. VEry painful awakening.

I wondered if it was a syndrome or I was just possessed.
It is simpler than it looks.

I have a spiky molar as a result of some denthisthry a few years ago that catches my cheek from time to time (it's about 50:50 between eating and when sleeping on that side.  The problem with this sort of thing is that after you bite it the first time, it swells up and becomes easier to bite again.

Sounds like it only afflicts those more advanced in years  ;D

That's a good point, actually.

I understand that the nose and the ears continue to grow well into senility. Perhaps the tongue does too?

At times, I do this as well.

I know I sometimes talk in my sleep, so perhaps I bite my tongue to stop myself saying something I shouldn't.  :-\

I've got 2 protrusions inside my mouth on either side of my lips, presumably from many years of being nipped in between my overbite.

I don't often wake myself biting my tongue, but recently if I've fallen asleep in the chair sometimes I feel like I've been about to boak when I wake up. I wonder if my tongue's been going somewhere it's not supposed to....
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Wish I hadn't looked up long tongues on YouTube, and "tongue guards" on Google Images.

I only do it when I'm eating too fast.

Kim - you should really get that tooth seen to.  Oral cancers sometimes start from running wounds in the mouth.

Usually when napping not night time sleeping.  Happens a couple of times a year and has done for as long as I can remember.

I bite my tongue quite often (and painfully!); I've put it down to losing, over time, several teeth from the rear of my jaws in particular, that I think may "guide" the teeth past the tongue for people with a full set of teeth.

PS - my dentist puts my poor teeth, and loss of a few, down to years of racing using sugar-filled drinks.

I don't bite my tongue but i sometimes bite the inside of my cheeks in my sleep. It's a bit unpleasant too  :(
