I agree with the comment given in the readers responses afterwards that the advice is pretty vague and is basically a guide on how to haggle

All the bike shops I've spoken too in recent months are pretty up beat about sales so there is probably less room for a successful haggle now

Another point is that although the haggle example for a 400 quid bike is worth a try, go below 250 and the margins aren't there for any savings!

I know some helmets can be silly prices, but that is taking the biscuit!

Yeah.  I know what most bike shops will say if you've got them down to £380 on a £420 bike, then ask for £30-50 for free.  All very well to put it on paper... ::-)

That article could almost have been machine-written it's so dull.  The only reason it's got us interested is 'cos it's mentioning bikes.
