I think that calls for the recycling of that, stupid, Sun headline, "Will the last person to leave Britain please turn out the lights."

The real reason the frog-faced fascist doesn't got to church is the risk he'll spontaneously combust if he put a foot over the threshold...

...that - and he's a c*nt.

If that was part of the show, even I'd go to church that day

The second funniest thing is Laurence Fox fuming that his application for Mayor of London candidacy has been rejected.  He's claiming its a conspiracy by Sadiq Khan, who he labels as "crooked".

Last time, Fox gained 1.8% of the vote share, so a real threat to Khan.

He submitted his paperwork at the last minute and without properly checking that those who were nominating him were eligible to do so (something which every candidate is repeatedly reminded to do).

I do wonder if it was deliberate.  He gets to whinge to his racist pals about being "blocked" without actually having to undergo the repeated humiliation of losing his deposit...

That sounds awfully like a coherent plan, something I’d not expect from Fox.

Kit-kat are really good at doing specials.  We get them from Brazil where there are at least 2 different "brazilian" collections and a specific collection of flavours for Sao paulo.  The acai one is very purple and much nicer than the real fruit which is disgusting!

A colleague once brought back wasabi kitkats from Japan. They were disappointing - not enough wasabi to be interesting.

This both baffles and horrifies me in equal measure. How could the photographer in any sense consider this a good idea?

Further reporting shows the photographer in that school took pics before the disabled children arrived, which suggests the school is partially culpable as well as the photographer.

Sadly various disabled people and parents of disabled people are saying they suspect some parents have asked for disabled-children free shots...

This is almost certainly not the first time this has happened.

Yet more exclusion.  😞

That seems to me very clearly about the additional risks of (IIRC) Atlanto-Axial Instability, which is common among people with Downs Syndrome and carries a serious risk of spinal cord damage and paralysis.

I remember a bit of a scare about it 25 years ago or so, at which point it was strongly recommended that anyone with Downs Syndrome be screened before taking part in certain physical activities that carried more risk. Rugby, diving and trampolining were specifically called out as examples.

I've no idea what the current British Gymnastic Association guidance says, and I'm sure OFJ could have handled the situation better, but to me this is about responding to a very specific risk (albeit perhaps inappropriately), not about trying to exclude someone with a disability for shits and giggles.

ETA - looks like if you have Downs and want to take part in any activities regulated by British Gymnastics, you have to have medical signoff. The relevant form is kept both centrally by British Gymnastics and by the coach, and sets out whether or not there are restrictions on which activities you can participate in.

I get the feeling that there's probably poor reporting in that article, and potentially misunderstanding and poor communication between Sally Phillips and the trampoline park.

I think asking for a fresh doctor's letter for every visit is a clear overreach (and I'd be surprised if that's actually what they're asking for), but it's too simplistic to say "we should be allowed to take these risks, just like everyone else" as Sally Phillips is reported to have said.

That's probably fine for her and her son, given that if he's registered with British Gymnastics they're aware of the risks, which in his case are presumably no worse than for anyone else if British Gymnastics don't restrict his participation in their activities.

But I don't see a commercial activity provider - or its insurers - being content that their duty of care to users is adequately discharged without some check that the potentially higher risk to people with Downs Syndrome is properly understood by those users.

That's where I think a proper risk assessment process needs to happen. The reporting implies they were turned away at reception and told to get a GP letter which happens A LOT to disabled people when people want to fob them off - despite the fact it can be almost impossible to get such a letter. GPs aren't obliged to write one, they can demand hundreds of quid for it, or say rightly "I'm not qualified to know" which they aren't.

You can risk assess to include or exclude. As a disabled person I've experienced both.

The article seems to suggest the X-ray view has changed in recent years and people with Down Syndrome are not more at risk if they have no external symptoms. The BBC of course is too lazy to find out what the legal situation is, or get a physical activity and disability expert to comment.

Similarly a blind friend of mine had a soft play centre try and boot her out cos she had a guide dog (who was sleeping quietly tethered to a table the entire time). Friend stood up to them and called out their bullshit very hard indeed.

I'm sufficiently sceptical that I don't believe service providers anymore cos they are often such massive disablist liars.

It’s easier and simpler to turn people away than it is to do proper risk assessments of each possible user group. I suspect in some cases there’s an account in the background who has done a cost benefit analysis and decided that in the most part, minority potential high risk users will just roll over. In other cases it’ll just be laziness or disinterest by the operator. I don’t think it’ll be active disabilist rather just lack of thought, although I’m sure there are some arseholes out there.

For every complex problem in the world, there is a simple and easily understood solution that’s wrong.

I'd say passive and pervasive disablism is the norm in our society. Increasingly so as the government ferments a trope of benefits cheating and faking it...
