5 x 100km BPs
« on: 27 June, 2011, 08:36:49 pm »
So... I've done two BPs (South Glos and Avon Cycleway) and fancy finishing off a Brevet 500, meaning I need 3 more 100s somewhere in the South West.

I'm pretty much decided that I'll do Tasty Cheddar in October and the Mini-Tour of Blackmore Vale and Cranbourne Chase in August, so I need one more.

Any suggestions?

I don't want AAA hilly but I don't mind lumpy. I was looking at The Lizard Loop or the New Forest and Coast. Another option is The Wizard and the Llamas as it is just a few miles down the road from my parents.

The Tasty Cheddar is a good ride, I did that last year with my brother as his 1st Audax. Very well attended, good controls including a pub and qualifies for OSM points as well (Organisors Sadism Points TM). The Blackmoor Vale is also a good ride  ;).

The New Forest rides are less lumpy than the 2 above, and excellently organised - highly recommended.

There's also Dustman Dave's Out and About from near Taunton on the 17th July. Have ridden this once and think I enjoyed it but can't honestly remember much about it :-[

I've never done the New Forest 100 but I always try to do the accompanying 200km "On/Off Shore".

It's one of the year's highlights (3 ferry crossings!! It's an adventure).

Any reason you wouldn't consider the 200?  If you are racking up 100s then you'll be fine with the New Forest 200, it's an easy second 100.

If you get to the end of the season and you are still one short the Dartmoor Devil is an excellent ride

Although it is "AAA hilly".

For an AAA null points ride there is Pippa Wheeler's permanent, Mad Hatter 100.

Only reason would be I did 100 miles on Saturday and frankly, felt broken until this morning. Not sure I'm ready for 200. Maybe next year. It does sound tempting though.

Another option would be a Mesh, I've ridden one from Bristol - Chepstow - Malmesbury - Bristol.
As you can imagine it's not too hilly either !

The Centurian Challenge (not the Super Crimper, that has AAA points)

edited for link
It is simpler than it looks.

You did 100 miles on Saturday?  Sounds like you're ready to me.

If your local Mis Mesh Organiser has cards left.

Try a DIY.

..... fancy finishing off a Brevet 500 .....

Trouble is a 200 doesn't count for the Brevet 500. The 150 does, and still gets you over to the Island. That may be a good option. Is the YACF southern camping meet still happening over this weekend?

Which one; the New Forest or Lee's?

I can't remember Martin, I thought there was talk of a southern reunion over the weekend of the Lymington rides somewhere in the New Forest, but I didn't pay attention properly.

IMO calendar events would be better than DIY / Perm / Mesh rides for Smurphboy to finish off his Brevet 500.

The New Forest 150 starts with the 200 IIRC, and chops 50K off at the end. So win win - ride a distance he has done before which counts towards the award and get the atmosphere of the 200 thrown in. If there is a YACF happening as well it could make a great weekend.

Hmm, the 150 sounds appealing if I'm cycling back with a camping load (although I may end up driving down so I can get home at a reasonable time after a 200).

Currently my plan is still to camp down there.

Just rememebred...it will be ride #12 of my 2nd RRTY so 200km it is.

Watching with interest...
I've done two 100s so far, am hoping to do a couple of 200s, but would also like to get in another 3xsub-200s, like smurphboy.

Lymington, Centurion Challenge and Tasty Cheddar are in my calendar.

Am thinking a North Somerset 100/160 Perm might work - want to ride it together Smurphboy?

And/or one of 3peaker's Perms?
The Vale 100
YatMon 150
if you can travel to Chelt/Tewks to start. I fancy a crack at the YatMon some time soon.

Ask me again in 6 weeks. I broke my hand today!

But in principle, and as long as you like flirting with time limits. I'm in!

I'd be interested in riding the North Somerset 100 Perm with you if I'm available.

Have ridden The Vale twice before, very nice ride

Sorry to hear that GWS

So a quick update. Hand hasn't healed as quickly as I'd like but I'm being a good boy and obeying the physio.

I can start riding again next week - I'll start getting some miles in on the commute but clearly, I need the motivation of a ride or two. I couldn't do the Exmouth Exodus this week (got no grip in my right hand)

So the new plan is:

New Forest and Isle of Wight Century 150km BP - this could be pushing it as I did my first century the week before I broke my hand and it too close for me to be confident I could do it...?
The Wizard and the Llamas 114km BP - near my parents (so bailout options)
Tasty Cheddar 100km BP - local and I know most of the route

Which leaves me needing one more BP. Any ideas? Or do I just HTFU and do the New Forest ride (I could do the 100)? Not sure I fancy a Perm, although I've never done one, so probably a flattish Calendar event...
