Importing .gpx.kml files to Garmin Edge 200

I've downloaded several files from the organiser of a forthcoming European tour. Although they were listed as .gpx files, when they arrived on my Mac they were shown with the double file suffix .gpx.kml. When importing them into the 'New Files' folder on the Garmin, they do not automatically move over to 'Courses' when I power up.  However, if I simply remove the .kml suffix, the files migrate to 'Courses' in the normal way.  Seems alright, but I'd like to be sure before I go that this will be OK.

I've had a bit of a search on here without success. Can anybody please help?  Ta.

If you open them in TextEdit (or similar) what do the first couple of lines look like?

I suspect they’re GPX files and some server misconfiguration is causing the KML suffix to appear erroneously.

That's not a GPX file.
Certainly, the Garmin won't be able to read that.

I don't recognise it, but I've never looked into .kml files.

Perhaps some tool will be able to convert it, or contact the org and ask for actual GPX files?

If I delete the .kml suffix (leaving the .gpx), then open it in Text Edit, I get:

Yes, that's a GPX.

But I have no idea how opening the same file in the same plain-text-editor would give different results depending on the file extension.

Something Apple-related, perhaps?

It's certainly a bit of a mystery to me what exactly has happened here but, having (hopefully?) managed to get the Garmin to accept it, I'm not really inclined to spend a lot of time delving into the whys and wherefores.  I'll drop a line to the originator of the files to see if he knows . . . but I'm not sure that he'll be able to shed any light. As I'll be travelling with other people, it'll be interesting to see how their gps devices deal with it. And if my Garmin route-finding is less than precise, I should be able to rely on others (some of them locals) knowing the way
