Watching the trackers and thinking these guys are faster than me on a motorbike.

Best not to think on a motorbike.
It is simpler than it looks.

Your eye is naturally drawn to the leaders and Matt Page is clearly a machine.

Indeedy so. Quite incredible.
But.....will he be caught by De Jong, Anco?
My money says he will.

He has, Mathew is here at Brampton and is sleeping. Suffering from the heat and unable to keep anything down.

And now he's back on the road.  Reached BC 25 minutes before Anco and is shown as approaching Northallerton, while Anco hasn’t quite crossed the A1 yet.  Since he's still at least 100 km away from Hessle I can probably go back to sleep for a few hours ;D

I had hoped a few people I know would make Dunfermline this morning before work.
My check of the tracker at 3am showed they were still at Moffat and arrived in Dunfermline not long after I started work for the day.
I now also estimate that everyone else I know will be making it to Dunfermline before half 6, or the earliest I could possibly get there after work.

Hmpf.

Just seen a whole bunch of LEL-ers on my short walk to Tesco! I hadn't actually realised the route came within a few streets of me (at least I hope that's the case, and that they weren't just lost).

Matt has left St Ives and is on the last stretch with an ETA of midnight.

Unbelievable - I can barely do 20kph on a 200km - let alone more than 24kph INCLUDING sleeping over a gazillion more km's and metres of climbing.

Moreover, he left his phone & brevet card behind :jurek:  Someone from the control is chasing him down the road to return them.

All very impressive, but I can't help thinking all this publicity  about how quickly this guy may finish LEL  isn't in the true spirit of audax. After all it's not a race is it?

Who coined the phrase that sportives are for people who think they are racing and audax is for people who think they aren't?. A very impressive feat of endurance cycling, regardless of the motivation

I think if we set up a 'challenge ride' like this, it's great that fast riders will see just how fast they can complete. They are riding contre le montre; not one another.
Let's not kid ourselves how widespread the publicity is: an fB page basically.
Should be approaching Debden as I type, maybe by midnight 15.

What is Anco riding? From last time when I helped at St Ives istr him as a recumbent rider?

Road bike of some sort.  They all look the same to me ;)  Definitely not a Darksider.  Only seen one recumbent in the flesh at Hessle, being a spangly green Challenge high racer.  Plus the two velomobiles.

There are at least 5 recumbents that I’ve seen. Probably more.

And three velomobiles: black one, white one, eagle one.

7 Bromptons, 2 minivelos, 1 rigid fork MTB, 2 tandems, 1 tricycle. Talk of a fat bike somewhere too.

The Bromptons probably seemed like a good idea on the train to the start.  The temptation to bail must be overwhelming on a bike that can go in a bus or train  :)

Harthope Moss on a Brompton is not much fun.

Two of the Brompton riders were through Hessel southbound pretty early and seemed to be enjoying themselves.  The elliptigo rider has just informed me that the organiser is a sadist.  Coming from a masochist I reckon it must be true.

Saw one  Brompton going on the s/b Humber Bridge yesterday am. He might have been a DNF, of course.  A Elliptigo rocked up at Hessle not long ago.  Black & red QuattroVelo came through here yesterday am.
