Yahoo Groups shutdown
« on: 18 October, 2019, 09:53:56 am »
Yahoo announced on Wednesday 16th Oct that they'll be shutting down their Groups facility. They're blocking new additions from next Monday 21st Oct and deleting the lot in December. Somewhat brutal.

Anyone still in one?  I'm in a couple that have stayed active for ~20 years.  I suppose that might be taken as a sign of middle age...

A couple of low traffic groups for me - Moulton, Brompton and the moribund Audax. I hope the mods will archive the collected wisdom somewhere searchable. There is a lot of useful information amongst the noise.

Also in a few longstanding ones, which have dwindled since the masses who care about neither privacy nor usability decamped to Facebook.  I'm not optimistic.

I've only had a quick look, but this looks OK: https://groups.io/

That's where my local cycling group has migrated to.

Likewise, Camden Cycling Campaign is going there.

They buggers have fairly profited from it: you need premium membership to transfer a group and they've just doubled the price. Currently at $220.

The list I manage is spreading the cost and I initiated transfer this morning.  Nothing happening yet.

Is the brompton list worth joining?

Wonder what is happening to the moulton one as I found it interesting

And the Brompton list.

Is the brompton list worth joining?

It's full of very knowledgeable Brompton owners (including several OTP), so if you want obscure Brompton knowledge I'd say yes.  Since it's a mailing list it's much more convenient to read than a web forum, so you might as well join...

Strictly, I believe that Groups is not closing, but is being cut back to discussions only - no supporting file storage, images, etc.

Which is more than a little ironic for those who bemoaned Yahoo's takeover of eGroups.com, turning our perfectly good mailing lists into horrible web fora (which we studiously ignored, except when necessary for administrative functions), and attracting an influx of new users who didn't know how to reply to the right message or quote properly.

It's only taken them about 19 years to sort it out...

I wonder if this means we'll get DejaNews back in 2021?
