Title: LEL 2021
Post by: riddon on 23 August, 2019, 08:27:32 am
I am a little confused over the entry requirements for LEL 2021. I keep getting invitations to enter a ballot for a place. I am a (fairly) long term member of Audax UK so it says I am guaranteed a place. However can I enter now or am I still guaranteed  a place if I wait until the official entry date in January 2021?

If you’re guaranteed entry through auk membership then you don’t need to worry until jan 2021 I don’t think. The ballot that’s open for a week is to raise some cash now and also to give people a chance to get in who aren’t guaranteed a place though other methods

There's a couple of posts in the random questions thread from when I asked a similar question two or so weeks ago.

The answer there was that if you have a guaranteed place, and keep your membership valid then you don't need to worry till Jan 2021.

If you have the guarantee of a place because you are a long term AUK member ( and remain a member ) then it is pointless to enter the ballot for the 500 places available at the end of the month. You gain nothing and deprive a non guaranteed rider of the chance to secure their place.

As repeated in several places .. we have to have cash in hand now to get all the work done ..cover expenses already incurred ,  controls booked, deposits paid etc etc etc.

But if you would like to send £100 ( or even more ) as a 2 year loan to help  our finances please pm me

This ballot allows some of those without a guaranteed place to have the chance to know now that their 2021 place is secured.

Then  after  guaranteed places are taken up in early Jan 2021 ..  we shall know how many places we have available for the second ballot that is mid/end Jan 2021 .

You are picking up the invitation to enter the ballot, as a member of the facebook  LEL group .. but just ignore the invitation as it is not relevant  to you

I can't remember what the cut-off date is.  When did you have to be a member of AUK to be guaranteed a place?

You don’t have to remember. You have to use google for a second or two....

It’s 12th September 2018.

Just out of curiosity, the lel2021 website states, about the route:

"It is hugely varied, passing along windy plains and through remote hill ranges, as well as through the centre of three of the most beautiful cities in the world."

Which three cities are we talking about? Edinburgh is one, London doesn't count as the route doesn't pass through the centre, maybe Cambridge is the second city? and the third?

We're really happy to tell you that we've secured Guildhall Yard in the City of London, for a central London start. This will be our start for our earliest time slots, including our 5am 100 hour group.

The City is eerily quiet on Sunday mornings, so you should be able to ride out of town on empty roads, especially if we set off really early.

We're still working out the details, so some of this might change, but I know lots of you will be keen to know that we'll have some sort of central London start.

The finish of LEL 2013 was the day before the 'Ride London' event. Very few people noticed that, and it gave an opportunity to show off the LEL jersey in a massive crowd of cyclists. Delph Cyclist obliged us by posing with Big Ben in the background.

I had considered filming the start from the Mall, but it was wet and dark on the day, and the Madegood team were covering it. So I planned to film Delph Cyclist on Ride London. In 2017 Ride London clashed with the check-in day.

I'd tend to favour a later start for the fast group if it's in Central London. They are of interest to the press, and pictures would be better with more light.

Will the finish be in the same place as the start? The idea of cycling into London with 1500km in the legs does not appeal...

I'd decided I was probably volunteering before I finished

I think that's very unlikely. The organisers are not going to want tired cyclists trying to negotiate their way through London traffic in the middle of the day so I imagine everyone will finish at Debden.

I presume that those riders who start in the City will cover 20 or so km more than those who start at Debden, and will have to accept that. I can't see how you could adjust the route for the majority to compensate for the small number who will be able to start very early from the centre.

In 2013 we had an optional prologue starting at The Mall and finishing at the official start at Debden. That was fun but, even with a relatively small number of riders, navigation was a bit of a challenge at times. I rode as back marker and picked up several overseas riders who had become confused at junctions.

I think people are getting the wrong end of the stick here.  I'm not one of the team so don't trust me, but when LEL talk about their "Central London start" this is to differentiate it from their main start.  They've run this system before: some riders (have the option to) start in the city centre, while everyone else starts at the main start/finish control on the outskirts.

The 2013 "start" in front of Buck palace was a prologue.

The finish can not conceivably be in Central London .. we would fail all sorts of duties of care to the riders.. so kill that worry stone dead now please.

Similarly we can not possibly start ALL riders in Central London .. no matter how quiet the roads are on a Sunday..  compared with current plans that would be giving a huge headache for all riders to get to Central London on a Sunday .. never mind the logistics of organising the start to get away in blocks of 50... major headache for example would be loo provision

Alwyn's plans for the start .. currently involve a very early fast group on a restricted time .. and a lot more early start groups than in 2017 when we had a 1 hour gap with no starters  was it 7.00 until 8.00 ?? . So without preempting the Boss's decisions .. an early prologue would be a possible .. but even that would give our early full time starters  a bit of a tight window ....    .to ride the prologue and start  on their allotted time..

We are not even sure that we can organise a sight seeing prologue at the moment .. it will depend on whether there is another London event that has closed roads or closed bridges.

Patience  please .. we do have experience of organising the event .. we are all riders ourselves .. we are trying to give riders a great and memorable  event and we are well aware of our duties of care...

Full details will be worked out and announced when we are certain of what we are doing .. for now .. we have the use of the Guildhall facility on the Sunday .. we are working out .. how best to use it.

Yeah. Same here. I don’t need the ballot, but the email made me a little excited when it landed.

I've very tempted. Unfinished business from 2013 (my Achilles both went sproing around Edinburgh and I limped as far as Brampton southward before throwing in the towel) but currently, medically, it's a no go.

If I can get sorted soon though and start getting fit again...

I'm excited about trying again.

I joined the ballot. I've been an AUK member for around 5 years but it normally laps for a month or two so don't get a guaranteed place. :(

Did you check your number in the file linked on this page https://audax.uk/static-data/lel-2021-auk-members-guaranteed-entry/ ?

We allowed a period of grace for renewals this year (ie some after Jan 1st are OK) but now everyone has warning, there will be no period of grace next year or in 2021.

Yeah, don't know when I renewed but my number isn't there. I may just pay if 5 year blocks so it doesn't happen in the future.

I did wonder who would be posting at 3.38am, but that explains it. Welcome, and good luck in the ballot!

Thanks - i've been lurking for a while on the forum as one does so thought I'd "jump in".
Nice to get a guaranteed early LEL place but I expect I'll be in the pot with everyone else in January.

Welcome Trampy. As a volunteer at Edinburgh on the 2017 LEL I was impressed by the international feel of the event. People were there from all over the world. Coming from Australia would be amazing though.

Just a quick reminder to all AUK members with a guaranteed place - if you haven't renewed your membership yet you must do it by Dec 31st in order to keep your name on the list.
Emails did go out yesterday to those who haven't renewed yet but a few resulted in "out of office" returns where people have a work email address recorded.
As always, if you want changes to household members (add or remove) please contact me (membership@audax.uk) before renewing - I should be able to turn round any requests quickly enough for you.

Brownie points for the reminder .. may well save disappointment later, as with the enormous overseas interest we will have to stick to the laid down guide lines for members

Latest eligibility list is now available here https://audax.uk/static-data/lel-2021-auk-members-guaranteed-entry.
There will no doubt be a few numbers missing - for example if you renewed by cheque or standing order then we may not have recorded this yet - contact me via membership@audax.uk if you think you've been missed and the list will be modified as needed.
