Tandem Ride SE England
« on: 01 September, 2009, 01:31:27 pm »
Towards the end of last year we led a tandem ride for the Surrey & Sussex Tandem Club.  Maybe we were over ambitious with the route but for a number of reasons - short day, large numbers, very slow service at lunch, puntures etc - we had to take a few short cuts and miss out some interesting parts.  We have a hankering to ride it in it's entirerity while the days are a bit longer than in November.

The ride would be a challenge as it is hilly with some technical parts (pinch points and so on) including (weather permitting) a section of bridleway.  It would not suit beginners or the cautious.  Pace would be expected to be resonable, not a head down bums up hard pace but not a family ride sedate pace either.

Vital stats 44ml, 2500ft climbing, tea stop at 12ml, pub lunch at 23ml, then tea and cakes at our house to finish.  Location - Farnborough Hants, J4 M3, Farnborough Main Line or North Camp stations.

Would there be any interest from the tandem couples on this forum?

I'd be up for that.  SW London to Farnborough by train is easy enough.

We could* be up for that. We could cycle over to Farnborough from home. What date and start time is being considered?

Oh just spotted this. Could be tempted too, if it's still in consideration?
At this point the last w/e of Sept (26/27) is our only free one.

Thank you Guys for your interest.  If Kathy and Tim are up for it 4 tandems would be good.  Let's pencil it in for the 27th and a 10.00 start time in Farnborough.

Could you all PM me to confirm, say by the beginning of that week?  I'll send back address, directions and a .gpx route.

Do you have any cake preference  :-)

Too challenging for us in our current configurations, I'm afraid.  Hope you have a great time! :)
Getting there...

Sadly, I'm planning to be somewhere else on the 27th. What about the following weekend?

(I need to be in London on the Saturday evening for a ride)

What about the following weekend?

At the moment I am (we are) easy on dates so the 4th it could be.  But the Things are not free - or are they? Kathy/Tim what about you?

Post your free dates here!!!

That weekend is currently shown as free on the calendar, so we should be available.

Might be of interest if you do another one in early part of next year.
Won't have spent enough time on our new tandem by then to contemplate a ride of that magnitude.
& I shall be in China for 2 weeks leading up to, France the week after; I really ought to spend time home with kids.

I think we could do the 4th - though there is apparently a BEER festival that weekend too, but we're less committed to that one.  ;)

Thanks Russel & Rachel for a nice day out. Weather was perfect for cycling. A nice circuit with no shortage of interesting bits  ;D Not sure if Russel was referring to the climbs (not insignificant), sandy track, or cultural sights when he speaks of interesting bits, but they all made for a fun day.

And special thanks for the cakes at the end

With the out and back from Morden we did 160-something km. Gatorskins held out superbly until about 5 miles from home.... one quick re-inflation was sufficient for us to limp home though so fettling can wait for another day!

We should do that again!

We had a nice day - thank you Graham, Emma and the Jonathons for coming.

Glad you got back OK Emma, must have been very dark in places!

No photos from us as we did our usual thing of taking the camera with us and then not using it!

Kathy, next time OK?

Thanks for arranging it Russell, we had a great time. Probably only half the distance that the things did, but that was plenty for us.

Thank you for the cake as well - 10/10 for cakery.

Either I had a headwind this morning though, or someone has stolen my leg muscles!
