My first tandem ride
« on: 24 June, 2015, 09:56:07 pm »
Carol and I had our first tandem ride courtesy of Aidan and Lynn. We borrowed their Dawes Galaxy Twin and cycled back from Lanchester to Durham. What an excellent adventure: we're hooked!

Excellent!

How do you put the stoker in charge of the pedals, then?  And why?

Was the pilot clipped in?

I noticed that Graeme's three back pockets would be handy to keep sandwiches and a flask of tea in. Perhaps something to read.

It has been the most fun thing ever.

Ruthie: Apart from going to see the Dead Kennedys tomorrow, we're both free. I have 10 weeks holiday.
Fboab: I would love to - but 10 weeks holiday = no money. Penniless. Utterly broke. :)
Cudzo/Butterfly: I exist to make her life easier. It took me time to learn this.

Ruthie - you and 'shroom going to give it a try? Might be a good way to bag that 200km audax you've been thinking about.
:)

I have never ridden a tandem and my balance isn't great. What could possibly go wrong? :-\

Hmmm. Sounds like a science experiment, I wonder if you could get funding.

There's a tandem trike in Lanchester too (owned by Lynn).

'shroom - I can't be trusted to stand up and walk along perfectly sensible flat pavements without fracturing a radial head.  I can however manage to pilot a tandem and aside from my regular stoker (the SmallestCub) have had a range of wriggly power sources on the back, from SmallestCub's slightly smaller friends to Actual Full Size Humans.  Including one of 'my' headteachers, who was wearing massive high heels at the time and would have been utterly scuppered had I dropped the bike.  And CrinklyAuntie who, as my baby sister, probably offered the best bickering potential of all possible stokers even without the fact that she is taller than me and spins low gears while I mash high ones plus she's a wrong-foot-down-person to boot.  We did pretty well and had a jolly nice bike ride.

If _I_ can do it without having injured someone, you certainly can!

Well done Graeme and Daisyhill.  Tandems are brilliant, aren't they?

Oh you total git.  Ten weeks?!  Green with envy.

I thought you couldn't make the Dead Kennedys?  Are you both going?
