Am currently watching 'Anonymous' with Rhys Ifans. I think its worse than 'The White Queen'.

The Lone Ranger

Uneven. Patchy. Curious. I can see why some critics hated it, I can see why some might like it.

It's a hoot in parts, silly (not good silly) in others, offensive (needlessly high body count) in others. Dark. Could be viewed as being deeply critical of the American dream, of capitalism.  A rewrite of the LR & Tonto story.

Reminds of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' (same director, producer & Johnny Depp) - aiming for a simiar kind of slapstick I think. Depp again clearly enjoys playing a comedy character.

True, but even the gleam in Ifan's eye could not save it. The dialogue was just poor and it was very tedious.

Totally enthralling stuff. Highly recommended. Can't say much more without spoiler tags.  :)

My son is at Wilderness this weekend and saw Rodriguez last night. He's already texted me to say how keen he now is to see the film.

"Dispatch War Rocket Ajax to bring back his body"

Etc.

Cheesy it may be, but in comparison to Flesh Gordon?

The Man Who Wasn't There

Very entertaining and definitely recommended. It's been on the telly (I watched a recording) so it will probably come round again.

Watched Solomon Kane last night.

It strats out really really well, Solomon is a, for want of a better phrase, pirate.

In the opening segment he is raiding a North African castle when he is confronted by the Devil's Reaper, who he manages to escape from.

He then turns his back on violence, knowing that the devil will come to claim his soul if he does not.

The next hour or so is him struggling with his non-violent life, and his search for the daughter of a family he meets up with.

Then it gets a bit silly.  He is captured by evil forces, and crucified.  He manages to get off the cross (by pulling his hand off the nails) and can still sword fight!  He then goes to the castle and gets stabbed through the shoulder (all the way through) with a sword.  After a bit of grimacing he gets up and has a sword fight, weilding two swords!

Other than the silly bit it was good, totally enjoyable.

Untouchable

French film based on a true story about a kid from the projects who gets a job as a carer for a quadriplegic rich dude.

I loved it. It's wet-your-pants funny and has great performances by the two leads.

Can't help wondering how much the story has been Hollywoodised though - there are a lot of cracks that have been heavily and glossily papered over...

Edit: Kermode has it spot on, as usual:

The Breakfast Club (only took me 30 years).  Didn't think it was all that great; the dialogue is rather mumbled and I may have missed some of the humour.  Would have stopped watching if it hadn't had Ally Sheedy in it.

The central message seems to be that disparate teenagers will get on with each other after smoking enough dope.

Kick Ass 2.  I liked it but there was a feeling of diminishing returns compared to the original.  I think that the original was so fresh and fun that any follow up was always going to be a lesser piece.

While I enjoyed it, I would prefer them to leave it there but if it does well in the box office I doubt they will though.  They did inevitably kind of hint at a further sequel possibility right at the end.
