[and a big shout out to all the Druids reading. Actually they're probably partying ...]
Can't be arsed to google it - do the mornings get lighter first, or the evenings??
Anyway, this feels like good news; I've been feeling the gloom these last couple of weeks. And the temperature has risen 10' this week - it's almost spring!
-
yes it was almost double figures when I went out today.
Just thinking that in Hammerfest the sun would not rise today. Days were short enough when I was there in November
-
The evenings have been getting lighter for the last 3 days or so. But still another 5 days before the mornings start getting lighter.
-
I have plans to miss next winter. This could be my darkest day for a whole two years!

Are you doing a Hotblack Desiato?

Then I shall start celebrating in 5 days time.

It's more than 3 / 5 days, earliest sunset is on the 12th + or - a day. Same offset before the solstice as the latest sunrise is after, that's new year.
-
Depends on how far north you are.
-
No it doesn't, latitude varies the sunset/rise time of day extremity but not the date on which it ocurrs.
Confession: I once spent several hours trying to work out how many days apart the spring equinox in the UK was from the equinox in Qatar. My method and working were entirely sound as I came up with 0 days, scratched head and checked my working. 0 days.

Thanks, that made me laugh out loud. I've done things just as silly.
-
The solstice/equinoxes are the same date everywhere, but the latest sunrise/earliest sunset depends on the latitude.
eg for Doha, latest sunrise is about 13 January, and earliest sunset is 30th November.

No, just hiding out in the southern hemisphere.

ISTR that Fatters would regularly post on 22 June "The nights are drawing in" or "winter draw(er)s on" or somesuch.
Very glad the tradition is still being observed.
-
My two favourite days re. daylight are approx. Dec 30th. - Jan 1st. when sunset goes out to 16:00h and approx. Jan. 20th. when sunrise is at 08:00h.
This is at 52.14N 0.88W; other locations are available.

I'm not sure I've ever met the bloke, but I'm happy to oblige.

When I heard about the SUV ploughing into pedestrians in Melbourne I sent a message to my daughter to check that she was OK. That was on the solstice. She was seating sushi on the beach and had heard nothing of the vehicular attack.
