Forecast for good Friday and easter Saturday looking pretty bad. Subzero overnight. Hope things improve.
That will make it fun as will the northerly wind.

Quite, those coming from the south get headwinds, those coming from the north get snow. As long as the roads aren't icy it should all be OK.

At what stage (if any) do folk put their faith in the weather forecast?

my (very non scientific) experience suggests that anything more than 3 days is nothing better than a guide to the <likely> weather, 2 days before is about 75% accurate and its only at about 1 day before that it can be considered almost certain (and even then the exact timing of weather coming through e.g. showers can vary quite significantly at short notice).

I'm planning a ride this Saturday and the metoffice forecast has changed from featuring <quite a lot of rain> to <no rain> in the space of three hours this morning so looking ahead a week strikes me as pointless.

Ah - but we are BRITISH and endlessly pondering the weather forecast is what we do...

The current forecast looks mixed with a chance of rain, showers or it could be dry. The wind direction could be variable a swing round during the day and there might be a possibility of a light frost and even some light snow showers at the extreme end of the probability scale.

I think this forecast will prove to be 100% accurate

With the teams already gathering ready for this weekend can I wish all teams a great journey with plenty of adventure.

Unfortunately my summary article of last years events was unable to be included in the current Arrivee but we do now have space specially reserved for the next edition so can I make a request for as many teams as possible to send me photos/anecdotes to include in this. The deadline for submissions is 15th April so if you can be quite speedy sending me material after completing the event as well as of course completed brevet cards with all receipts etc.

There is no compulsory finish place for the arrow’s but in recent years with understandably riders enjoying converging for some post arrow banter Weatherspoon’s Postern Gate seems to have become the place to finish (though still of course optional). It worked very well for the large numbers in 2017 and is looking forward to our return this year. They are putting on a few extra staff for Saturday morning for us,with this usually being a quiet time for them  ;)

Something I will say for later this year before I forget is that if you find yourself unable to get a team together for the Summer version of the arrow’s (22/23 June) please consider the option of a solo dart (run over 14hrs/minimum 200m) as our recently retired membership secretary who has won the Summer dart trophy for the most mileage for the last few years has asked that someone make a bit more effort this year to take it from him, so there’s a challenge for someone out there.

The equivalent notes to these on the AUK forum page also contains the full list of 2017 finishing teams/members and distances plus a few extra notes

Pedal Up and stay safe.

Good luck everybody.

Having ridden a 300 last weekend with few ill effects, I might do a DIY 400 Sunday / Monday if the weather and levels of CBA permit.

On the continent it looks like we'll have a superb weather. Either sidewind or tailwind, no head wind at all for Team Fe. At least 2 other teams will have at least 3/4 of the time tailwind.

feeling better about my decision now, conditions atrocious cold, wet tired, running behind schedule. Decided i'd be better off not pushing into the night when options would become fewer, and my team would have more chance without me slowing them down, a check of the rain forecast on arriving home made really grim reading.

Just did a 75k loop into Fife from Embra with Mrs F, and I'm pretty glad I'm not riding through the night!

Best of luck to all those still on the road.

Both of the ACH teams have packed :(

We made it as far as Warwick Station before getting a train home. It seemed fool hardy to attempt to ride through the night in the cold, wet conditions, and it had stopped being fun of any type.

Wessex CTC team packed at Daventry on a similar latitude to the ACH team above. Not safe. We all had loads of quality kit and I still couldn't feel my hands. A scenic route but too many submerged potholes and all of us shaking with cold. Chapeau to teams still battling on.

There are some complaints in the ranks about being cold - i'll alert the captain.

Team Suffolk is down to one (I know: I’m not a team now). Two packed in Boston ‘spoons, the other two at the next control in Skeggy. I couldn’t work out how to get back to MK from there, whereas my dad is picking me up outside York around 11am, on his way down to ours for an Easter mini break so I’m behind the team schedule but getting the miles in (warming up in Grimsby McDonald’s).
