Hamburg-Berlin-Cologne 2018
« on: 11 February, 2018, 01:30:00 pm »
As yet another weekend is frittered away with no cycling* my thoughts have turned to Hamburg-Berlin-Cologne 2018, which I intend to ride.  Thought I'd begin this thread to start looking forward.

I'm now checking the website http://www.audaxclub-sh.de/node/739 daily, which states that entry will be open at the end of February.  Anybody else intend to ride?

*poured with rain yesterday afternoon and this morning had to fix gas hob ignition instead of going on clubrun

I need to check some key details before I commit:

are we supposed to call it "Cologne" or "Koln" these days?

How often is it run? How hilly is the route?

Every 4 years, a little less then 10,000 m of total climb last time.
A friend of mine told me some sections are hilly, some sections are flat and windy.

I'm checking the website every second day or so, fingers crossed!

The hilly bits are medium hilly and the flat bits are very flat.

There's a desert in the middle and beer and sausages at every control.

http://www.audaxclub-sh.de/node/739 shows entry is open from 00:00 on 24th February; so this coming Saturday.  Cost is 190 Euro.  Just hope I'm in a fit state after taking my wife out for birthday munchies on Friday evening.

I've entered and have been assigned rider number 46, see https://www.cycle-regman.de/endspurt.web/veranstaltungAnmeldungen.jsf?vId=67551  Remember that Germany is 1 hour east of the UK.

Bizarre.  I've just followed the link I provided in my immediately previous post and found my number is now 45.  The link was part of an email message sent to me confirming entry - "Du hast Dich für unseren Superbrevet: HBK Hamburg-Berlin-Köln-Hamburg 2018 am 04.08.2018 vorangemeldet und bist momentan die Nr. 46 in der für jedermann einsehbaren HBK Teilnehmerliste."  That "momentan" really was a fleetingly short period of time  ;D

I am in at number 27.  I have not much idea what to expect so any previous experiences welcomed.  Beer and sausages sounds like carbs and fat,  Just the ticket, no?

"pre-registered" !!  :)

Quite a sensible payment/cancellation terms - assuming I read it correctly:

Quote
Your registration is only binding if you transfer the participation fee of 190 Euro to the account of the Audax Club SH until 16.03.2018.
...

You can check or change (or even cancel) your registration using your personal link: https://www.matt-the-ultra-randonneur.de

Changes to your registration can be made until 30.06.2018.

I did have thoughts of doing this to celebrate being 50.  They seem to have gone away.  I haven't done anything longer than 400 for a couple of years either.  So don't watch this space.  :'(  ::-)

I'm aiming to do it in 2022 to celebrate being 49. Or something. I've been wanting to do this ride ever since I first heard about it (probably after reading the thread on the 2006 edition). The dates don't work for me this year, which is a convenient get-out, but I'm determined to get round to it some time. It has always appealed to me far more than PBP.

You could say I'm doing it to celebrate my 60th birthday.  It's unstarted business for me, having entered 4 year ago but DNS because of hospital appointments for both my wife and son in the week of the ride.  I've not been to Germany since 1981 and am really looking forward to it.

I'm in. My wife and family are looking forward to spending some days in Berlin in the meanwhile, so this time for me the challenge will include a (minor) logistic effort but also the hope of having some supporters at one third of the way... they'd say: "don't count on it"... but hope never dies!

It looks like the second biggest group of riders will be the Thai contingent. Hopefully they won't freeze like they did at LEL17.

Excellent.  Looks like I'll have some company, then.  Or maybe for the first 10km ;D

I've entered. I did the first edition in 2006 so it will be interesting to see how it has changed. Sabine (my wife) will be helping again too so we are both excited to be meeting old friends.
