Can you actually hear someone conducting an orchestra? ‘ ;D

I've made a couple of orchestral recordings in my yoof, using the binaural pair above the conductor's head technique, and the answer is - perhaps surprisingly - yes.  Conductors should be screened for keys / loose change / etc. before being allowed anywhere near a microphone...

Contemplating given in to a cold. I've been dodging it for a while. Last weekend my wife had an epic sniffler. So I fled to Frankfurt and spent the week shaking the hands, being hugged, and kissed (occasionally all three) by a large number of people of whom I'm sure 50% had some kind of nasty. Even the precautionary measure of raising my blood gin levels to 90% doesn't seem to have saved me. Swollen throat. Check. Loosening of the mucus in the noseholes. Check. Fudgy brain? Check.

Fuck it. I'm going to drink some beer. If I'm going to feel like shit in the morning I might as well enjoy the night before.

In other news, my wife has taken her mother to Venice for the weekend (and left me to cat-sit). I seem to be getting a lot of texts that begin with oh, FFS, now she's... I have pointed out her mother probably can't swim.

Drinking ale by candlelight in my local.

That'll be fermented rat blood. Tim Martin will be claiming to everyone who will listen (six drunks and a dog) that it's a lot better than that euro-beer.

I remember once getting completely snowed in at a local tavern (in Coventry, just not that one). Huge snowstorm, eight-foot drifts, like someone had blown up the marshmallow man. What does a man do, but order another beer and three dozen chicken wings. Come the apocalypse! Of course, by the time the ploughs came through, it was 10am and we were so drunk it took another five hours before any of us could drive. Time that might profitably have been used digging out my car, which took another hour. It's a good job I've never had a real job where you have to turn up and stuff. I'd be awful.

I'm doing drugs and alcohol now. Just like rock and roll. Stuff your Lemsip, I'm on ibuprofen and a can of Robots vs. Clowns count. Good god, I'd see that movie. Reminds me that as students, we'd make cocktails that included Night Nurse and nutmeg. That is what happens when you share a house with pharmacologists and nurses.

ETA. I used to be a molecular geneticist. Really, why didn't I cure the common cold?

I read this to my wife. She said “Is this the man that writes about “bad cat”?  ;D

Shush, both Bad Cat and LMC are quiescent*. They seemingly don't share my taste in music (currently Meg Myers' Take Me to the Disco).

I have to keep my MiL entertained when they get back as my wife has to run off to learn to tap dance (I've stopped asking, it's better to nod and mutter that's nice, dear). Now MiL doesn't know about the entire Alexa thing, so well, what if I wasn't there and the house started talking? It might admittedly result in a heart attack. I explained this to my wife, who looked at me pointedly and said well, you're getting rid of the body.

*words like quiescent and labile are how you spot scientists in general population.

Having arrived at Riyadh, at 3am this morning rather than 9pm last night, courtesy of Air France, I'm sitting in the hotel recovering while my other colleague is at the refinery.

I don't think me on a refinery with 2 hours sleep would have fully supported the risk assessment.

Well, that might have happened more than a few times and in more than a few places, both geographically and anatomically. I'm sure, deep down, she appreciated my surprise appearance. Sometimes she has trouble expressing her emotions in ways that don't endanger my testicles.

Could probably have got home on that but it would have been long, slow and boring and into a cold headwind.

Waiting for a tuit of sufficient force1 to descend on me so that I can get on with tidying2 out the girls old bedroom. Dr Beardy (Mrs) seems to have plans for me to decorate it as well.

1. Or for DrBEARDY (Mrs) to descend the wooden hill3 and tell me to get the f***4 on with it.

2. When I say tidy, Dr Beardy (Mrs) means dispose of the contents therein and replace with new as required.

3. Dr Beardy (Mrs) is Woking at home this week on account of the students having a ‘reading’ week. She currently uses our bedroom as a study, but has designs on me converting the boys old room into a purpose built study.

4. Moth of a fishwife Dr Beardy (Mrs) has. It quite makes me blush.

No, but she is married to a dyslexic idiot who doesn’t proof read.  ;D

She’s actually a Doc of sociology and specialises in death studies pertaining to,children’s awareness. I’d much rather she was into moths!

Looking at this thread prior to going over to the workshop to make some more sawdust.  Noticed the other day that my old Audax warhorse has got a nice thick layer on it. Curiously, I'm not bothered.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Just finished mowing the lawn for what I hope will be the last time this year.

I did that the other day.  A whole new crop of late-season weeds had appeared.

Resisted the urge to over-indulge in what my dad referred to as "destructive gardening" while coppicing the growth at the base of the remaining BloodySycamore.  If I had the tools and slightly less sense of self-preservation I'd fell the bloody thing.
