Recommend me a calendar event.
« on: 13 July, 2018, 11:19:24 pm »

I'm at that stage where I am now planning my holidays etc... for next year, and as part of that, I want to try and do some Audax rides in a few other countries (despite my Dutch BRM's having gone through .nl, .be, .de & .fr, they are all still considered to be Dutch only). So I'm wondering what events people would recommend as great examples of UK audax events, which are easy to get to either from the Eurostar, or the ferry to Harwich. I'm thinking 200's or 300's, BRM only, and I'm in no search of AAA points. It would be good if the ride had a civilised start time (So I can have a proper breakfast either at a B&B or greasy spoon cafe), and sensible B&B's near by. So what rides do people recommend that meet this criteria?

J

(I'm mostly asking now so I can pencil them into the calendar as soon as they are announced, or now for events that are known to always happen on the xth weekend of $month).

Well... local to Harwich there are the ACME rides of course!...

Green & Yellow 300km and Asparagus & Strawberries 400km both BRM and starting in Manningtree.... only issue is a midnight start, but if you slept on the ferry then that would be a good start time and convenient location too...

4th May 300k G&Y: http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/19-900/

30th May 400km A&S: http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/19-901/

If you were feeling up for it, you could also come and savour the smell of cabbages and The Fens on the ACME 600km ride on this September ;)

Alas, that clashes with Race Around the Netherlands. Else that would be perfect.

Talk to me about the point where it hits the Norfolk coast. What are the opportunities for fish n chips? (Shall I just be honest here and say that I'm basically after a tour of the foods I miss from the UK? i.e. fried breakfast, and a visit to the chippy?)

Don't take it the wrong way, but I'd rather goto Hell. As in I'm on a cycle tour then, I'm riding to Hell. In Norway...

A&S goes to Wells next the Sea which has Fish & Chips  but you need to be there in good time (just before 21:00)  to enjoy them. The first time I rode it I did the chippy, last year I did the supermarket (I'm not a great fish & chips fan :) )

Enjoy Hell! :) (will it still be crazy long light days by then?)

12 hours to get there. What's the distance?

Alas, 13 hours of day light at the start of the trip, and nearer 12.5 by the end. Aiming for 150km per day, Which should give me plenty of time to just relax and enjoy the scenery.

About 218km usually with a tailwind

Here's my first crack at it (with the chippy) and a leisurely long lunch in Halesworth (100km in) https://www.strava.com/activities/599134904
Pre-LEL I was a lot quicker round it last year (24kph vrs 21kph)

Ditching devil in early June. Lovely ride, great control food, large field.

Rowlands raaamble is a superb route but does have a lot of climbing.

Oasts and coasts 300 not to far from London. Lovely your round Kent hilly bits flats bits coastal bits dont remember the opportunity for fish and chips. But lovely quick cooked breakfast at first control and great ice cream later on.

I also love the dean oxford is a relatively short train ride from London (or not too taxing a ride on the day before) ride goes through the Cotswolds the forest of Dean and over the severn bridge. Downside is time in the season, there was snow this year and ONLY a few hardy/crazy people finished.

Eddington  127miles, 170km

The Mildenhall Rally over the Aug bank holiday weekend has a choice of distances on the Saturday. You could make a weekend of it, plenty to see and do, people to meet...
I haven’t done any of the current routes, though I’ve enjoyed five or six previous versions.
Or for something earlier in the year, have a look at the Double Dutch, though it might be a bit home from home

Amesbury Amble 300 was on April 13 this year, 2200m flat. Raynes Park start is 20km from St Pancras, hall floor accommodation before & after (2 rooms). You won't find a greasy spoon open for the 06:00 start but the 1st control is Lasham airfield which has that box well and truly ticked.

I can recommend everything organized by Aidan Hedley (see http://northern-audax.org.uk/): gorgeous, but slighlty hilly routes. Just take the ferry from IJmuiden to Newcastle, cycle an hour or so, and you're at the start.
