In terms of guts, results, and all round ability, Nicole Cooke beats them both IMO.

Hoy and Cav are great, but are specialists in their respective fields.

You can't do any better in sport than being the best that there is at that particular moment.  I think, at what they do, they all achieved this status.

Comparing Hoy, Cavendish and Cooke is like comparing Lynford Christie, Sebastian Coe and Paula Radcliffe

It has to be about entertainment at the end of the day, for me the most entertaining sight is a well drilled lead out train in the final 20km of a flat Tour stage, so the GB team pursuit squad are my favourite. Hoy and Cav are both good for the sport, because they produce manageable clips for the evening news and sports summaries. Cycling purists prefer climbers because we can see the suffering.

Damon.

The thing that makes cav a contender is that the level of competition for him is greater than for the others.

Do you think that Millan San Remo or the track champs had more worldwide coverage?

And the viewer reach in this country?  Olympics.  That's all that gets wide coverage.

Who said anything about this country?

This thread is about who is the better cyclist.

This thread is about who is the better cyclist.

Define "better".

Fair enough, and I think it's about equal on that basis.  But best is a very subjective measure.

One of them does wonderfully eccentric things like play 'follow the moped' on a track, the other holds me up in my car.

No contest.

 ;)

It is simpler than it looks.

If I could do that, we wouldn't be having this conversation! ;)

Totally agree. It's pointless trying to compare all Britain's great riders against each other. Ok, so Hoy rides in circles. But he rides in circles in his events better than anyone else. What more can he do? Dick on his opponents even more than he already does?

I'd accept that Cav has probably got more competition than both Hoy and Cooke, but you can't take anything away from those two as they've consistently proved themselves in their chosen disciplines...
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Vicky. Even more outstanding than Chris.

The four of them are superstars, but if I had to pick I'd go for Cav and Cooke as their achievements are absolutely superb.

I'd forgotten about Vicky!

Which is quite remarkable as I spend so much time idly wondering what it would be like to get into her knickers.....
