I can see I'm going to have to get a Polar HR strap.

I'm fairly certain my heart was going at a wee bit more than 59bpm when I was chasing m'colleague uphill on this morning's ride.

What do I get if I don't *already* have a garmin transmitter...?

They seem hard wired to be compatible with my iPhone but I'd rather one that was compatible with my Garmin edge 800 - that compatibility seems to be secret in the googling I've just done with the above recommendations.

If they are ANT+ capable then they should work with Garmin 800.

I'm using Wahoo TickrX (with is dual band Bluetooth and ANT+) with Edge 1000, with Etrex 30, with iPhone, and with iPad. Works well with all.

Cheers, I thought that, but it's safe to check.  Much of the above seems to assume you already have a knackered Garmin HRM to cannibalise.

I only have the Garmin HRM because it came with my Edge 510.

I may be wrong but I don't think Polar do an ANT+ HRM, so beware if going down that route.

I must admit, I've never had a problem with my Garmin HRM.

Yes the Polars I looked at had a notably absent ANT+ compatibility as far as I could tell.

IIRC Garmin developed or was involved in the development of ant+. Polar didn't get onboard but developed their own version of Bluetooth 4.0. As a result the two brands focused on their own protocols. This meant, in the past,  Garmin only used Bluetooth in the past. Polar is the opposite having.never used ant+ but users Bluetooth.

My advice is look at what you have and buy for that. For example if your bike computer is a Garmin get ant +. If it's polar get a Bluetooth sensor. Whatever you get a the Bluetooth can always be connected.to your smartphone.

After the quack has told you to keep your heart rate below 145, riding with a duff heart monitor is wonderfully liberating.
