Slid about 25 feet today on my arse
« on: 14 January, 2009, 09:23:41 am »
Came out of front door at 6.45am, didn't realise there had been a frost.  Set off down hill, had gone about 100 yards when front wheel went from under me at about 25  mph.  Thought to myself ' oh bugger, not again'

Semi-hard smack onto right hand side, but to my amazement I just kept on sliding down the hill on my side, such was the icyness of the smooth tarmac.  I actually had time to quite enjoy it. When I got back up the bike was 20 or 30 feet back up the hill.  Had trouble walking as the road was unbelievably slippery.

Weird.  50p size hole in brand new  birthday pressie £120 assos bibs.  Big graze on hip.

Ouch.  Glad you're not hurt worse. And enjoying the experience - kudos!

Commiserations, M. Pumpe.

First off of the year here today too - the road just outside the house was sheet ice as well. Fortunately a low speed event and no damage to the layers or underlying flab...  :)

The rear view mirror is history though - but then I always use those little £4.88 jobbies and keep a couple spare for the inevitible...

I was surprised it was icy this morning too, was driving though.  Locked up slowing to turn into doctor's surgery.  ::-)

Nuts! Yes, it was very deceptive today. People were slipping on the footpath near our house. I was going to do a 35 miler this morning, but I'm holding off.

Pain about the kit and hope you aren't too sore! Keep moving.
It is simpler than it looks.

It'll be ok, I think... nowhere near as bad as the previous times I've bashed my hip.  Tegaderm rools

First off of the year today too.
Sigh. +1. Sort of.

Had twigged that I'd hit a dodgy section, so was dismounting,  foot went from under me.  Nothing damaged but my self esteem.  :-[

Sympathy extended to M. Pumpe.

The road was the slippiest I've ever known it.  Even worse than the thicker ice of the last few weeks.

It's my fault. I took the Nokians off the MTB last night and replaced the non-studded knobblies.

Light frost here today but no problem on the roads.

I think it's impossible to put a 50p size hole in Assos Gear.

I'd say a £50 note size hole would be the smallest hole you could make.

Nearly +1 here .  I wanted to pass a guy on a three-speed before he performed a sudden right hand turn (there's a cycle path there, people do it all the time), so I wound my speed up to higher than I'd normally go down that road - about 25mph.  That was all fine, but as I went round a subsequent left hand bend my front wheel went skidding from under me.  I was absolutely sure I was going to do a one-point landing on my jaw, but I managed to skid the rear wheel too and get the handlebars pointing the right way, the front tyre bit again, and I was able to recover it.

I felt a bit silly, but not for too long because I had a three-hour Latin exam to get to, for the first half of which I still had the adrenaline shakes :-\

We want photographs.

It was bad out there today.  I was planning to go out but held off when I saw all the emergency vehicles flying down the road to a really nasty accident.

We now have freezing fog.

That's why I won't buy Assoss clothing. Coming off is expensie enough.
When I ws at Primary School, my mum used to sew a smiley face  :) patch (or some other design) if I put a hole in my clothes. Maybe you can still get them?

And thats why I wore my old, hole in knee, bib tights on annie's WARTY ride. Keen observers of my knees noticed the scar caused the same time as the hole in the tights.

In other news,  The Boy reports he fell off on the way to school this morning. Front wheel hit a patch of ice and wham, onto the deck.

Strangely, despite several "offs" over the (many) years with destroyed Endura tights, Adidas warmers, 2 destroyed waterproof jackets, one holed Foska Bones, none of these have resulted in holy Assos!

I am feeling a little stiff from just falling over this week, though - must be old age creeping in. Definitely not as bounce as I once was..  :'(
