Hereward the Wake 300km, Friday 13th July 2018
« on: 25 June, 2018, 06:16:37 pm »
I'll be taking orders for the pre-ride curry soon. Riders can expect an email in a day or so.

By the way, is anyone interested in a Helper's Ride the week before? I can do Friday 6th July, but only with an early afternoon start - have to be back for Saturday first thing [I'm not that quick...]!

I would love to do this as he died (not the original one) recently aged 102 and I went to his memorial service last month, but unfortunately it's the same weekend as the EDCA 100.

Entered and booked to work from home on the Friday for some extra sleep. Hopefully this year I'll be in shape to start the ride and not just have the curry ;D

edit: can't make an early Friday start  :( otherwise I'd have joined you for the helpers ride

Ive already entered as Im in That London working on Thu/ Fri and have my train with bike place booked.

I'm making this my alternative "overnight-300-preceded-by-a-curry" as I missed The Green & Yellow Fields in May.

I didnt want to tempt fate by booking travel home to Edinburgh on Saturday evening so will instead stay over and head back north first thing on Sunday.  I should be home in plenty time to watch England in the World Cup Final at 1600.

Whilst the ride misses the Isle of Ely, I like the fact that the route manages to go through Willingham - according to Wiki - "an ancient earthwork about 1.2 miles (2 km) east of Willingham, Cambridgeshire is still visible at the junction of the old fen causeway and Iram Drove. This circular feature, known as Belsar's Hill, is a potential site for a fort, built by William, from which to attack Ely and Hereward"

Up-to-date 2018 GPS files are here, clickety.  I updated them last week to beep near this year's info-control locations (going by the routesheet).  Unfortunately I won't be riding this year, but the route on which the files are based has been used the past few years without incident.

The ancient RoW that becomes Aldreth Causeway passes right through the middle, although the track is straight and level.  The site itself is in fields either side of the track, with thick hedges, and absolutely no RoW or RoA at all to the earthwork, unfortunately — you can't even see anything through the hedges.  It's a large earthwork, but no way to really experience it.

I took this pic of the info board when I was out there a few weeks ago (click for larger):

Two are probably in the dark, though ;)

And I am in, with an ECE from work to make my Essex SR 400. I do like this ride, but probably won't bother to keep up on the traditional silly fast first 100... we'll see...

I sent an email but just in case....yes please  ;D

Mrs Tippers and the little tippers are at a concert in Audley End on the Saturday afternoon/night so I shall be pottering back to Colchester at a very civil place rehydrating along the way with some possible sleeps in beer gardens!

Many thanks

OK, the Clayton-Smith tandem is in. We've done this one before. The only time I've had to wait at a level crossing for a train, at 2am. We're nowhere near as fit as previous occasions, so towing opportunities will be (a) minimal and (3) comical.

Bishops Stortford is nearer (about  8 miles) and there are more trains.
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

Was about to say the same! And don't worry too much about the restrictions on bikes on Stansted airport trains, we have never known it be enforced at Bishops Stortford, although it sometimes is leaving London. Also quite a lot quicker, so it would need to be a very strong westerly wind to favour Braintree!

We're in too, only done this once before in 2015 when I seem to remember a warm night, looks like even more so this year.

haha you beat me to it on that!

From memory there are a couple of notable steep bits, the bit into Millbrook is short and steep and I think Maggot Hill (218km) might be the one Tomsk refers to the tacking hill on fixed.  There's a slight hill just before the Silver Ball around 260km which feels a bit of a drag, then its the rolling Essex Alps for the return There is nothing Welsh about any of them :) though the first time I rode it I suffered from Stilton to Pagg
