Smug Irony (Mcr Congestion Charge)
« on: 06 November, 2008, 09:51:17 am »
A fellow road user travelling in a motorised conveyance caught my eye this morning. He had proceeded to turn right (onto the road on which I was travelling) through a set of traffic lights. Indeed he had the green light, but could not proceed through the junction as the way was not clear. This fellow then proceeded to sound the horn, with which I understand all motorised conveyances have to be equipped, using quite some vigour.

Anyhow, although these events brought this road user to my attention, that was not the fun part.

The gentleman parked is automobile upon a disabled car parking space set upon the very wide footway afront a row of shops. I saw him exit his automobile carrying a clutch of posters. On closer inspection, I recognised the posters as  "Vote No! Stop the Manchester Congestion Charge" posters.

"Where's the fun in this?", I hear you say! Well, don't blink. You might miss it.

On reaching this point in my commute, I had cycled past about three quarters of a mile of slow moving traffic and I knew that I would have to cycle past another solid mile of traffic before I took my turn off changing my heading away from the city centre. I was so amused that the man opposed to the congestion charge and delivering posters during rush hour, exactly the time the peak time congestion charge would apply and he, himself, was stuck in solid traffic for quite some considerable time.

Is this not akin to having a large deep open wound and ignoring it?

Sorry for indulging.

He wouldn't have a clue.  There seem to be blinkers applied to all motorists.
Getting there...

I have seen the error of his ways- it is all down to a simple misprint. The poster should read "Vote No! Stop the Manchester Congestion- Charge"

It will get my vote

I don't wear blinkers for driving.

As always, in English, there has to be an exception to prove the rule.

I fail to see the irony here. Surely it is clear that the delay to the payers of road tax was entirely due to being held up by your untaxed bicycular device?

Venture not to the magical Trafford Centre!

Mucho anti charge nonsense from the Peel Holdings people. Perfectly legal of course.

Yet Mark Hunter MP and Stockport council castigate Arriva buses for refusing to carry anti charge adverts.

Censorship they shout. I have a nasty feeling they may win the vote.

The fellow concerned is clearly keen on exercising his democratic right to sit for hours in queues of traffic.

Censorship?  Zomg lol, to use the vernacular.  They're private buses, they can advertise what they like.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Now there's a thing.
The motoring lobby, who have almost slain public transport and say that public transport is useless, so we all need a car, is now turning to public transport to advertise and promote the use of the motorcar, which will have a further adverse effect on the public transport and eat into the profits of the public transport company.
Funny how the motorist lobby cry, "unfair!" when someone exercises their right. Mind you, they cry, "unfair," when they are in the wrong and get caught. (speed cameras)
I wonder who's side they're on?
Not for the common good I would wager.
