The Long Way Home - Supertramp

But there are times that you feel you're part of the scenery
All the greenery is comin' down, boy
And then your wife seems to think you're part of the
furniture oh, it's peculiar, she used to be so nice.

When lonely days turn to lonely nights
You take a trip to the city lights
And take the long way home
Take the long way home

I know it's been mentioned before but those lyrics make me smile when I'm on an audax

Wham - Last Christmas

Last Christmas, I gave you my bike
But the very next day, you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

This is turning into the worst ever round of I'm Sorry I haven't A Clue.

I think the songs get sillier as the ride progresses - I started with 'It takes two' on a recent tandem outing and finished off with the Mighty boosh's 'Eels'!!

Recently someone posted a video of some audax soundtracked with Orange Juice by Stanley Brinks + The Wave Pictures.
https://youtu.be/rOIHV8iyzfU
The original lyrics about getting through with "alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, ephedrine and orange juice" are pretty appropriate anyway, but maybe an even more universal audax chorus would be "Ginsters, ice cream, Frijj, sausage roll and orange juice."  :D

The Chiltern May Day Audaxes are all connected to songs and have their own tailored lyrics. Furthermore, each year there are fresh new themed routes, and therefore songs.

2017 - 200km CHILTERN, CHILTERN, BANG, BANG visited locations from the film Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang.
SONG: CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG
Near, Far, on the handlebars
Oh what happy time we'll spend
Bang, Bang, Chiltern, Chiltern, Bang, Bang
Our fine ride this weekend
Bang, Bang, Chiltern, Chiltern, Bang, Bang
Our fine ride this weekend

2017 - 100km CHILTERN ROALDS, TAKE ME HOME - Followed the 200km route then turned for home passing the Roald Dahl Museum
SONG: COUNTRY ROADS - JOHN DENVER
Almost heaven, West of London, Chiltern riding, Out in to the shires.
Cycling’s great there, passing the green trees, slogging up the Chilterns, blasting through the breeze.
Country roads, take me home to the place I began.
West of London, Ruislip headed, take me home, country roads.
All my memories gather round here, Winter Warmer, Missenden Time Trials,
Dark and dusty, weather wet or dry, misty times or sunshine, teardrop in my eye.
Country roads, take me home to the place I began.
West of London, Ruislip headed, take me home, country roads.
I hear the call in the morning hour roads call me, the GPX reminds me of my start in Ruislip.
riding down the road I get a feeling that I should be there soon, Arrivée, Arrivée.
Country roads, take me home to the place I began.
West of London, Ruislip headed, take me home, country roads.
Country roads, take me home to the place I began.
West of London, Ruislip headed, take me home, country roads.

2018- 200km A RIDE CALLED QUEST - Designed to visit 10 British Cycle Quest checkpoints
SONG: SCENARIO - A TRIBE CALLED QUEST
East Berks stompin', rippin' and rompin'
Marlow, plus Windsor Great Park and Quainton
Checka, checka check it out
The loop's for the troops, more bounce to the ounce
And wow how now wow, how now, brown cow?

2018 - 100km SPOKE ON THE WATER Does a series of spectacular Thames river crossings
SONG: SMOKE ON THE WATER - DEEP PURPLE
We all came out to Marlow
On the River Thames shoreline
Route recorded on a mobile
With an allotted time
Fast zapping with the others
We're at the best place around
Windsor, Henley, already been done
Cookham next then Ruislip bound

Spoke on the water, tyres seem to fly
Spoke on the water

2019 200km HERTS SO GOOD A romp around Hertfordshire
SONG: HURTS SO GOOD - MILLIE JACKSON (or SUSAN CADOGAN who had a top 10 hit in the UK with the song).

2019 100km GET UP OFFTA THAT TRING visits Tring
SONG: GET UP OFFA THAT THING - JAMES BROWN

2019 lyrics and routes yet to be finalised

Tom Rosenthal "Go Solo"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VePaI3jX4Sk

They say it's matter of time
A thousand days and the sun won't shine
Before I come back to you

I'm happy, nothing's going to stop me
I'm making my way home, I'm making my way

For you love I will go far
I wanna be wherever you are
I know I'm coming back for you

Our love is a river long
The best right in a million wrongs
I know I'm coming back to you

And I'm happy, nothing's going to stop me
I'm making my way home
I'm making my way

I go solo, oh I go solo
I'm making my way home, I'm making my way

And I'm happy, nothing's going to stop me
I'm making my way home
I'm making my way

I go solo, oh I go solo
I'm making my way home
I'm making my way

This topic has just reminded me of the event I once organised from Thurlby in Lincolnshire.  At the time, LEL used Thurlby Youth Hostel as a control (LEL was a much smaller event in those days!) and there was a whole day between northbound and returning riders, allowing the controllers to go for a ride themselves on the LEL route to Lincoln and back.

The event was called "The Bluebird 200" simply so that on finishing, we could have a chorus of the Vera Lynn song "Thurlby Bluebird's over".

Yes - Roundabout

I see the roundabout
The route will  take you out 'n' out
I spend the day your way
Call it morning riding  through the sound and
In and out the valley

The tyres dance and sing
They make the chainset really ring
I spend the day your way
Call it morning riding through the sound and
In and out the valley

In and around the lake
Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there
One mile over we'll be there and we'll see you
Ten true summers we'll be there and laughing too
Twenty four before my love you'll see
I'll be there with you

YES - Heart of the Sunrise

They ride ahead and you follow
Ride on into the heart of the sunrise
Sharp distance
How can the wind with its arms
All around me
Lost on a hill and then after
Dream on on to the heart of the sunrise

Sharp distance
How can the wind with so many around me
Lost in the city
Lost in their eyes as you hurry by
Counting the broken spokes they decide

Sleep comes to you and then after
Dream on on to the heart of the sunrise
Lost on a road that you're dreaming
Dream on on to the heart of the sunrise
Sharp distance
How can the wind with its arms all around me

The JCB song

Well, I'm rumblin' In this 200k
I'm 55 years old and my bike's Giant I bought off EBay
And the pothole rattles my bum like berserk
While I'm  singing, "Don't forget your brevet card if you want to go to get the points"
Ive totally had a bloody hard day
But it's been good fun and bubblin and jokin' away
And the procession of cars stuck behind
Are gettin all impatient and angry, but we dont mind
An' we're holdin up the bypass
Oh
Me and my bike havin a top laugh
Oh woah
Sittin on the Brooks Pro
Oh
And I'm so glad I'm not in work, Joe
So glad I'm not in work
Oh no...
And we pull over to let the cars pass
And pull off again, speedin by the summer green grass
And we're like giants up here on our big yellow TCRs
Like zoids, or transformers, or maybe even bigger
And I wanna transform into a Tyrannosaurus Rex!
And eat up all the bullies and the drivers and their pets
And I'll tell em I'm Chris Froome and my bike's  a Pinarello

Found this one lurking behind the winter wood:

I've ridden that damned bike of mine for ever and a day,
I've seen all hours upon the clock slide up and slip away.
I've supped some horrid stuff in bars and greasy cafetarious,
And stamped in on the very dot with breath short and dispairious.

I mind when me and Bernie rode from Belfort to Tonnerre
And in a night as black as Hell got lost we knew not where
When in the dark a friendly light meant rest and food for weary us
And we rolled out on midnight all replete and gently beerious.

Remember how we climbed that road from river to the glow
And topped the summit over Dijon all spread out below?
Our lights were dim, the night was old, we swooped down all precarious
And rode in cackling with the dawn, two daft baboons hilarious.

We rode through day, through night and noon, through snow and baking heat
O'er miles of gravel, holes and filth with frozen hands and feet
We ground up slopes no map could find against a wind imperious
For hour upon unending hour: man dear, it was not serious.

Four hundred once, with chums all strong and young but oh so kind;
Half-slaughtered by two hundred k we struggled on behind.
Three-fifty, and we climbed a hill, so crawling and laborious,
A butterfly flew through my wheel and exited still glorious.

I've crossed the Jura all alone, though someone else seemed nigh
And cracked with folk who were not there beneath a Breton sky
I've woven dozy on the road from side to side delirious
Then laid my chin upon the bars and snored like rhinocirious.

I've slept beneath the velvet sky and loved the Milk Way
I've watched old burning Jupiter with rams and fishes play
I've braked for feckless badgers and for roe all starting fearious
And bit macadam more than once with outcome deleterious.

Now I've a sheaf of brevet cards and hair that once was grey,
Endurance grows with age, they say, but all must fade away -
A final crest, a final stoop, a rapturous hurray,
And then the final card to stamp, the last grande arrivée.

But now I'll go on wishing for bright rides and ends victorious
And if there is a Paradise, why then it must be moreious.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

After last night's gig: Bauhaus, Silent Hedges:

Following the silent hedges
Needing some other kind of madness
Looking into purple eyes
Sadness at the corners
Works of art with a minimum of steel
Pure sensation

The beautiful down grade
Going to hell again
Going to hell again

Self confidence leaks
From a thousand wounds
Faults of civilization
Burning the private paradise of dreams
Minus hands of the electric clock

What happens when the intoxication of success has evaporated?
Following the silent hedges
Following the silent hedges
Going to hell again

Pure sensation
The beautiful downgrade
Going to hell again
Going to hell again

Good choice.  Used to be one of my favourites to play on my Walkman (that dates it) when I was a runner.

this little ditty has got me through more than one long night

"This is a song about a superhero named Tony
It's called Tony's theme
He's got the oil on his chain, for a ride in the rain
No baloney
Ride around on my bicycle like a pony
I'm waving hi, hi, hi, hi, hi
Gu-gu-gu-gimme a scream
Give me, give me the theme
Of Tony
To-ny, To-ny, To-ny, To-ny, To-ny
I am Tony, super bicycle Tony, I'm racing
Spitfire turn and pop a wheelie, burn and evil chasing
I'm waving bye, bye, bye, bye, bye
I got a card in my spokes
I'm practicing my joke, I'm learning"
