I was chatting with Deano about how we haven't had a Tan Hill overnighter for awhile. So, here's the plan for another one.
1) Ride to the Tan Hill Inn (https://www.tanhillinn.com/) on Saturday March 21st
2) Eat food and drink beer
3) Do some weird pagan equinox shizzle (other religious options are available).
4) Go to sleep - either in the dorms if you're sensible or in tents if you're well'ard
5) Sunday 22nd: Exfiltrate to a transport hub, preferably via some comedy off-roading.
D and I can both do the weekend of the spring equinox - the weekend after is less good as there's a rather excellent audax (https://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/20-203/) running nearby. That leaves the choice of Friday 20th or Saturday 21st.
So, who wants to go to Tan Hill? Just in case you've forgotten how much AWESOME FUN that these trips always are, here's a reminder. Here's what it looks like if you go in the autumn:

*pencils into calendar*
Worrying, I suspect this may be the Brompton's turn, but that seems unwise...
-
Bah! That weekends out. :( My Mum's birthday on the Saturday.

We are also interested

I'm sort-of interested but I would need to do some proper cycling between now and then...

Well - if you pull yourself together in this regard, so will I.

I'll go if Oscar's Dad, Chris, Wow and BP go.
There are loads of Bronze Age relics around there, mevves find a stone circle for the equinox?

Potential...

This actually looks good. I'm in training starting tomorrow.

Good to see the interest

Perhaps a few of us Mid-Essex types could go? I need to see what 2020 looks like before committing (new job etc...)
-
Just checked the work calendar and I'm not on so count me in. I might even camp this time.

This is all shaping up nicely. I've taken the plunge and booked the Friday off work.
-
I’m tempted with this, would the main drinking night be on the Saturday? as I’m unable to book the Friday off work

The plan is for one night, though if people really want to do two then we can do that too. Saturday night is currently winning the vote, although one of the votes for Saturday was mine and I really don't mind Friday, whereas at least one of the Friday votes definitely can't do Sat. The kitchen at Tan Hill stays open until about 9, and we've previously bribed the chef to stay open a wee bit later for people who have made truly epic attempts to get there after work on Friday eve - or who are quite disorganised.
I'm minded to leave the poll open for another couple of days and then make a decision based on who we have and how strong their feelings are.

Can I change my Friday vote to Saturday? There's a gig on Friday I want to go to...

I was chatting with Deano about how we haven't had a Tan Hill overnighter for awhile. So, here's the plan for another one.
1) Ride to the Tan Hill Inn (https://www.tanhillinn.com/)
Starting from where?
-
That's the joy of the Tan Hill Event, Cudzo. Ride from wherever, and share tales at the meet of derring-do. We'll be riding from Durham, probably.
Ride back is usually to Darlo, and that's all downhill.
-
Oh, so people don't meet till Tan Hill. And then they drink beer and they next day they ride (with COR?*) to Darlo and disperse. Looks like this is going to involve trains. :-\
*And optional hangover, of course.
-
We can do feeder rides - but probably not all the way from Brizzle.
-
I haz been checking trains. Getting to Darlo on Saturday is easy and surprisingly cheap. Getting back on Sunday is complicated and expensive, with numerous changes, due to a combination of engineering works (or something) stopping all XC (etc) trains between Brum and Gloucester, and LNER not having a timetable.
Perhaps the answer is to stay in the pub drinking beer all day till the lines are open again? Erm, I mean an impromptu DIY 600 from Tan Hill to Bristol!
-
Right, let's do the Saturday night: it doesn't work for Graeme and Cudzo finds it awkward but most people seem to prefer it. Sorry Graeme and Cudzo.
I've added an event to the calendar and will book myself a room pronto
-
I'm still on for this event, the plan is to ride there and back from Newcastle, unless Mrs B ends up working on Saturday, in which case I'll take the train to Darlington on Saturday.
The last time I rode up to Tan Hill from Darlington my water bottles had frozen on arrival.
-

I may ride up with tent and a mate. Only question is how it fits with the following weekend’s ‘fun’
-
I'm not sure whether I can do the ride, but I have floor/sofa space in Darlington if it would help anybody.
Take your shoes off when you come in.
-
A possible + visit rellys. May need to arrive at TH by CAR on Friday night/ Sat, do a circular ride on Saturday, and head off earlyish Sunday am. Camp; poss with car as tent backup. Or, if time allows: bike from/rtn to Harrogate.

If I’m free, I’ll be riding up from Harrogate

Tan Hill on a Saturday, not Friday. Ooo, thinks...
Considering a stupid plan for this one. Does anybody have an opinion / experience of
a) Wensleydale railway (http://www.wensleydalerail.com/timetable/) with a bike?
b) This (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31730128) off-road route from Redmire to Tan Hill?
Might need a bit of practice / training between now and then.
-
I haven't ridden the track up from Castle Bolton, but Apedale's lovely and a local classic. Hard work, though.
Dunno about the tracks north of Swaledale either - I think they're part of the Swaledale Way or whatever they call it, but that's no guarantee of quality IME. I'm sure it'll be fine.

AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!
-
;D Under no illusions about how to interpret Deano.
Ta; I'm expecting to be slow and pushing up the steep bits anyway - I just want to think that some of it will be worthwhile!
Problem is I'm vaguely considering taking the stupid toy (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=17.msg2412014#msg2412014). Hence wanting to minimise distance on road.

Objection: does not qualify. Category error.
-
Yeah, I still consider it a sort of bike, conceptually. Don't seem to have won that argument with anybody though.

I take it you're familiar with young Ed Pratt and his antics?
-
Yup; I'm somewhat less ambitious. Consider me a middle aged Pratt with less time leftover after family commitments...

Monoke or unike?
-
Might I commend to those who book early, the delights of a room to yourself. Yes, you can camp. Yes, there's a bunk room... Oooooohhhh but the luxury of the deep feather duvet, comfortable mattress and privacy of your own bathroom. Justify the cost to yourself that you're on holiday. Have a good time, see you at the next event.
-
Train tickets seem to have suddenly dropped from HowMuch?? to VeryReasonable, in case anyone else is looking. Anyway, I'm in.
(from Ribblehead; I reserve the right to decide on wheels nearer the time...)
-
March 20th is creeping up on us - in fact it's barely a fortnight away! Who's still in? It's time to get hyped! I can almost smell the Black Sheep airs wafting in through my office window.

If you are going to self isolate I suppose Tan Hill fits the spot....
-
Right, so my records tell me we have the following
Definite
Bunbury
Deano
Joe B
tom_e
Fboab
Chris S
Kim
Probable/Possible
Carlosfandango
Oscar's Dad
Blodwyn
Paul
marlan
Cudzo
sojournermike
andyoxon
Who's still coming? Stand in line please!
-
I'm in, trains and bunk room booked in.
-
Hopefully I’ll move into the Probable classification soon.
Actually I was up that way with my wife for a long weekend, and we popped to Tan Hill on the way home last Monday, there is still snow up there, camping area had a covering.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200306/5065c8023675daa922912d3c3240cf32.jpg)

I'll make a final decision nearer the time, but I'm increasingly concerned by the spread of Covid-19. It's sort of connected to my job and I don't like the look of the numbers tbh.
-
There’s a possibility, just need the door of opportunity to open a little wider.
-
I'm out, I'm afraid. It's a bit close to my university hand-in date and I'm full of terror in case I don't pass this module.
Floor space still available.
-
We're definitely in- I'll be riding, he may not be. Room booked.
-

He'll be running alongside - impressive!
-
Still a possible; unless CV19 factors mean I won't travel up from Oxon to visit Scarbs/Hgt...
-
I’m out. Far too fat.
-
I was about to book trains and things a couple of weeks ago when I b0rked my knee, so decided to wait and see...
I managed a hilly 100 at the weekend without too much knee drama, so that's a bit more promising. I'll have a proper look at logistics tonight.
-

Too late to be of use, but yes - the EldestCub and I used it to get from Bedale to Redmire on our Awfully Big Adventure about 9 years ago :)
The problem with the Tan Hill is that it is so blinking hard to get to without a bike or a car!

Okay, I'm in. Going to approach from Oxenholme this time. A split ticket extravaganza back from Darlington.
ETA: Bollocks, just realised I've booked the bunk room for the night of the 22nd, because trains had broken my brain. Have emailed them to see if they'll change it.

I'm still in between employment and its been a few months now so going to save the trip up North expense for Easter to visit the parents, so unfortunately I am out :(
Have a great time all

I'm still in but having some worries about the whole Covid-19 situation acting as a wrecking ball against all my plans for the coming months.
Anyway, my current plan is to have a couple of nights out camping, perhaps riding Newcastle-Haltwistle-Alston on Friday and then onto Tan Hill by way of Kirby Stephen. On Sunday I've got two choices; ride home to Newcastle or over to Yarm where Mrs B and the kids will be visiting family.

You're not alone on that one. I'm technically a high risk person (lungs), so I'm giving serious consideration to hermitism for six months.
-
I'm out. Sorry to anyone else who hasn't already cancelled their plans.
-
I just cancelled my leave 😓
-
Goes without saying, but I’m out.
Hopefully we can rearrange later when everything settles down.
All the best everybody

Yes, I was looking forward to this.
Be good to reconvene when we're on the other side, whenever that might be.
-
Agreed,
Maybe we could have a post plague Tan Hill night once normal service resumes.
-
Yeah, a trip up once all this has blown over would be cool.
-
Missed this first time, might be interested if a new date is arranged.
-
That would be good - a trip in the future with a few beers
-
Definitely. All together now:
We'll drink again, don't know where, don't know when ...

I had waved goodbye to my deposit but they called today and asked if I wanted to reschedule.
Planning to visit for Debs (NOTP) birthday, if the world is sane again by then.
-
I had one of those calls too. Couldn't think of a sensible date, but he said no problem I could call back and sort it out later.
-
I think the Tan Hill people are nice people.
-
Email from Tan Hill today inviting me back for a mid week pint or to camp. Seems their open again and are putting in place some precautions.
-
Yes, I was up there cycle camping last Wednesday. They are fully open, with outside showers and toilets, the outdoor event type ones. They have a beer garden now!
Had pre-booked a camping spot through their website, booked the table in the main bar when they were checking me in. The staff are still getting used to the new procedures, I had a great time, and loving the table service, didn’t have to get up for my pint of Old Peculiar!
Get the feeling they are very busy at weekends, and there was a lot of motorhomes there!

That's good to know, I'm in the process of devising a Tyne-to-Mersey ride for September and depending on which route I choose Tan Hill could make for a perfect first night.
