Dynamo interchangability ?
« on: 25 November, 2018, 08:00:58 pm »

I currently run a Shimano DH-T8000 dynamo hub on my bike, I'm building a second bike and was planning on using a SON dynamo of some kind. I'll be using Edelux II lights on both bikes, but was wondering if I ever wanted to use the SON wheel on the shimano bike, how easy is the interchangability of the connector? it is possible to make a simple adaptor cable?

A Shimano lego brick to a pair of male spade connectors is an easy enough adaptor to make, but the other way round lacks an obvious solution.  Suspect you'd have to get clever with a 3D printer or a bit of dead hub or something.

IIRC the Shimano connector will actually fit over the spades of a SON, but the lack of a sprung part means the connection isn't going to be reliable.

Why not have two parallel wired connectors on each bike? Then just tape/tyrap the unused one to one side until needed.

Because 99.99% of the time I'll never put the wheel from the new bike on the old bike. It's just having the option of putting the new wheel on the old bike (doesn't work the other way due to axle design), if I'm in need of an emergency wheel change.

I could however consider having a 3rd connector halfway down the fork, and interchanging the final bit of the cable with the hub...

Could you split the wire between light and SON spade connectors to wire in a lego block there? Then you could use the lego block instead of the spade connectors even if you never do swap the wheels – I find the lego blocks much easier to connect and disconnect than the spade connectors (I have both on different bikes) but of course ymmv.

I wouldn't want to cut the Edelux's captive cable any shorter than it has to be, so Kim's suggestion of a simple spade terminal to Shimano adapter is likely the best option.

The other way is to fit a Son Koax plug (third picture) and use the mini adapter with the Son:

And then mod a female kit (fourth picture) with a Shimano plug on the end:
