Golden Compass.

Hmmm ... 6/10.

Same problem as HP1 - too much plot-n-stuff squished into too little time. Very well executed, but ultimately a bit pointless.

Take Shelter.

Saw this knowing almost nothing about what sort of film this would be. I think it worked better that way and would recommend watching it without reading any reviews or synopses first (most seem to be rate it very highly, although Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian hated it). Was half expecting a "If you have been affected by any of the issues in this programme, you can all the BBC action line on..." at the end.

We're going to see this in January at the cinema, do you think it's worth waiting to see it on a big screen?

Watched it last night; it was much better than I had anticipated though I had imagined Lee Scoresby to be rather younger than that.

Total Recall.

OK - the OTT Paul Verhoeven shoot-outs were still OTT, but it all looks a bit... old, now. I prefer Starship Troopers for my PV-Blat-o-thon1 fix.

Very very good.

The first 3D film I've seen where the 3D was worthwhile. Gives lovely, lovely texture to the film

Enter the Dragon on TV this week. Never seen it before and it's a legendary film so I thought I would watch it. It was crap.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

McBobb and I watched Love Actually this afternoon. He'd never seen it before. One of us cried most of the way through it*.

I saw the last half (for the nth time).  I like the way the band of attackers suddenly multiplies to about 400 in the shoot-out and the way the neophyte defenders kill someone with every shot despite being knocked over by the recoil; women were real men in those days!

Harry Potter And the Cynical Cash-In (I mean Deathly Hallows Part 2).  Not too bad compared to Part 1, although I don't profess to understanding much of what was going on, having read the (dull) book a very long time ago.

Voldemort doesn't come to a sticky enough end, really.  You get to see Hermione's cleavage when she's dressed as Bellatrix (change one letter there and you're in all sorts of trouble; I imagine Rule 34 applies to these films).
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

We watched that again a few days ago, it was funnier than I remembered (I liked it the first time but more the second go round).

Captain America. Gave this a miss at the cinema as it seemed full on USA patroitism. Gave the Blu Ray a try and was pleasantly surprised that its not too bad, okayish plot, just entertainment and fun in a retro way. Best of the bunch of the superhero movies this year IMO.

"The Malta Story" this morning on TV.

A proper Sunday film. Not bad but Alec Guinness looked like he was stoned all the time and some of the planes were anachronistic.
The scene where the Ohio limps into Valletta lashed between two destroyers raised a tear.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

It wasn't actually a film in the usual sense but a documentary about 3 "Black Panthers" in the cess-pit that is the American justice system.  It was called "Land Of The Free".  After an extremely dodgy trials, they were sentenced to life imprisonment.   The Louisiana prison system then unilaterally decided to make that solitary confinement.  One of them was released after 25 years in solitary.  The other two are still in solitary after 36, say it again, 36 years.  The American constitution forbids cruel and unusual punishment but luckily doesn't mention black people.  I'm still too angry to write a letter to their ambassador that wouldn't set fire to the post-box.

Chico & Rita. A good animated film with some really great music. I would recommend it for the music alone but the film looks good too so is worth a watch.
