I quite like the idea of making my Rockhopper Comp a bit more roadyish by putting some Mungo bars on it - I'll have a spare pair of nice black cane creek levers to go on it once I've fitted sti levers on the road bike. I also have bar tape at the ready. I suppose it's then a matter of finding some 7sp bar end shifters, and presumably I'd need some inline cable adjusters as well.

You shouldn't need inline adjusters - you can adjust cable at the rear mech and the front will probably be friction anyway.Good point there, WJ. Now to decide on bars - I wish I'd not got rid of those on-one bars I had a while back.
Almost finished..
Bomber's old Brooks saddle fitted (from YACF's "For Sale" section..always worth keeping your eyes open).

In Ripoll, earlier this year, on the Catalonia tour.
On-One Inbred 29er, Hope rear hub on TN319 rim, Shimano T665 front hub again with TN319 rim. Brooks saddle, Easton EA70 bars, Ultegra drivetrain. Shown with Schwalbe Hurricane tyres, but has run Schwalbe Big Apples (both new and old tread pattern), Conti Race Kings and current sports some Conti Speed Rides.

Plus the seatpost is a bit limp/bent and rather blackBelieve it or not, its meant to be like that ... and they don't do 'em in orange. Sadly.
who is Tom?The father of the guy who made my seatpost .... duh! ::-) :P ;)
Those bent seatposts just look wrong.I buy my seatposts pre-bent - saves me having to do it myself ...

That's very nice, trumpet. :)
I'm such a fan of these conversions. I really think that they make the perfect bike for most people. The entrance to Halfords is normally littered with full-suss MTBs for £99 and low-end road bikes.
There's just something about riding a mid '90s, long wheelbase, rigid, MTB with fat road tyres that feels so right.
Let's face it, Thorn and Roberts charge a lot of money for "Global Touring Frames" that are very similar.
To their credit Halfords got it spot on with their "Subway" and I'm surprised that the whole world isn't commuting on their "Subway-8".
Keep them coming.
I'm tempted to keep one eye on Ebay to check for any "classics".
Posted elsewhere but fits in here too.

Agreed OD, the computer wire is a tad untidy, will have to try and tidy it up sometime.

^ thank you :)
Ideally I'd like to find a set of cheap Kona P2 rigid forks or similar for FrankenErn to make Ern more Bert like....
The very idea of a 531 mountain bike is rather delicious, like the last gasp of old tech in a new world that soon will care not.
What tyres are you using (and are they any good)?
Slope, that's really lovely!
Are the mudguard Gilles Berthoud as per the Blueridge?
Slope that looks well comfy.. lovely angles on the frame
I like it.
I like it.
Thanks! Still undecided about this bike - it seems a little too large for me, and my Mountain Biking days are over. Very heavy wheels. Avid BB5 cable disc brakes are not easy to keep adjusted! Rebuilding my old Dawes Horizon tourer into a butterfly barred hybrid / tourer is tempting at the moment. Hmmmmm.

Does Butterfly know you're dressing your bike up in her bras? :oI like it.

Then again, on the fourth hand, no doubt my rebuilt dawes horizon would end up to similar to my current road bike (Pinnacle dolomite 2, 2014), albeit with butterfly bras.
Lovely (Why don't you post the superb photo of it in front of the Dam?)
Can't believe how skinny the forks are for an MTB. Disc brakes would tie those forks in a knot.
I think I'm going to go with the MTB commuter conversion. Was looking at a pair of Schwalbe Big Ben tyres 26x2.0 tyres for extra plushness! Those and butterfly bars (why no moth bars?) and job should be a good oneDoes Butterfly know you're dressing your bike up in her bras? :oI like it.

Great conversion! Looks beautiful with the new paint job.

And they are very comfy and springy :) Unlike the back end which is stiff and ideal for lugging loadsa shopping and stuff

Any suggested tweaks welcome!
This was the best shout ever. Unfortunately I had to ride home through the mud and hail to really appreciate how much...Any suggested tweaks welcome!
Mudguards!
Mary came on tuesday!
So I fitted the On-One Mary bars to the Decathlon mtbso/commuter/rigidoffroad pootle bike on tuesday afternoon, then had a blast around Calais Muir woods on wednesday evening!

The white On-One mary bars were cheaper, than the black! No doubt a nightmare to keep clean, but at least they match the frame and forks! ;D And mighty comfy they are too!
the rack comes like that from the manufacturer, this is to enable it to use with disc calipers mounted on the seatstay. for lights loads (up to ~10kg) there is no difference in bike handling, compared to a usual rack which sits two inches closer to bb.
Is that a Saracen with a 531 frame?
Best thing I did with mine was bin the Cantis and fit V-Brakes (new levers required but it's a very cheap upgrade).
A bit or cable re-routing required as well but worth the effort for the superb braking imo.
Good luck with the "lawn".
Work in progress.....but starting to take shape....I really must cut my lawn instead of fiddling with bikes!

Best way to improve the lawn is to plant more daisies and dandelions, introduce some moles and put up a tent. Most of that will take care of itself in time, so best get on with the bike – far more worthwhile!

That's looking very nice......fun and practical all at once
And no doubt for a fraction of the cost of a modern "adventure tourer"
I'd happily take the Saracen on a fully-loaded adventure, in fact I think it's in need of a fully-loaded photo shoot (for that other thread) ;D
I'd like to see how the frame handles under a heavy load. The Raven Tour is very twitchy unloaded but gets better and better the more you load it up. There's a possibility that the Saracen may get worse and worse I suppose.
The Muddy Fox "Courier", in good nick, is my dream conversion. Why? Because I came very close to buying one in 1986, when they were like something from Outer space. I bought a traditional British Eagle Touristique instead (Both bikes were about £290) and had no regrets... but the Courier, like the Raleigh Chopper, is a bike I still have a hankering after.
