Windows 10 Screen sharing - for support
« on: 29 June, 2020, 05:21:26 pm »
A question for the Windows users, is there a simple screen sharing solution that doesn't need software installation - like the screen sharing in Messages for OSX?
It is simpler than it looks.

Yes, it has Windows Remote Assistance built in.

Or Windows 10 also has Windows Quick Assist. Seems that is similar thing, though you need to sign in to a Microsoft account to use it.

Ok, sounds interesting. Do both ends need to have a MS account?

Thanks

If you just need someone to see what you're seeing you could do it via Zoom.

As well as the built in version pretty much all the commercial ones have free versions.  They are incredibly easy to use.  Teamviewer is one I have seen used by a support team and i have splashtop paid version for accessing files remotely.

You can't do account elevation in Zoom for any task that needs aministrative privileges. I don't think there are any cheap/free/easy options that actually work.

I would, for close relatives, install a Firewall at their location and put a VPN server on it and then enable Remote Desktop on their PC. You can then use Remote Desktop Shadowing. There's a disadvantages here in investing time/money up front, requiring Windows 10 Pro and also requiring a Windows PC at home.

If you can spare £40 a month (annual subscription) there is GoToAssist. If it's a one off, a monthly subscription is £50. Spendy but it works - you can put a session in `Admin Mode` if you have administrator credentials and then you will be able to see the User Account Control dialog when it is displayed and any windows which are elevated.

Teamviewer is free for personal use.

https://www.teamviewer.com/en/

I use it to support some relatives who are no good with computers.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Team viewer does just work, but keeps deciding that I am a commercial organisation and then stops working. I have used Copilot but that requires that my mother downloads a small piece of software each time. She does select run when given the option but all that happens is the download which the operating system then hides from her. I found loads of copies the last time I was physically with her.
