I fettled the apple tree today.  Bit late, I know.
I prune it every year and give it a serious F off pruning once every three years.
This was the third year again.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Started re-working the front end of my

tourer. Experimenting. It looks like I will be able to get Campag cables and a little bit of padding underneath stitched on leather bar covers.  :D.

I'll even up the stitching when I do it for real, and will probably use black rather than white waxed thread. Now off to the bay for a set of cantilevers.

atl1e ethernet driver source, to disable the broken TCP segmentation offloading.

Our server can now send data over IPv6 at more than 20kb/s

(problem originally manifested as nonspecific sluggishness in Thunderbird, and took - to use the technical term - sodding hours to track down)

Unscheduled fettling (that I knew was overdue :-[ ):  I set off for work, got to my first gearchange, and the lever was free to move without pulling cable :(

Swift swap for a cheapie cable I had bought to do up one of the BSOs taking up garden space, and relief that the slightly revised cable routing meant that it reched, and I didn't have to use a tendem one as I had when I first built it up.

Silky smooth gear changes all the way to work.

Built a frankenputer out of the functional and only slightly melted remains of our recent catastrophic hardware failures.  Installed Windows XP on it.  I feel dirty.
And so you should!

Put 17T cog on empty side of fixed hub, for a try-out. Decided I couldn't live with the tyre tread facing the wrong way  ::-) Removed tyre, refitted. Feel better now.

Put a shiny (and rather hard) new Ladies B17 on the stoker seatpost of the tandem.  Will be interesting to see how it is received...

Front-wheel puncture (just the one). Will have to take the tyre off again tomorrow when the decent rim tape arrives from Chain Reaction.

Installed Windows XP on it.  I feel dirty.

In my defence, we are otherwise Windows-box-less.  Which, while an undeniably harmonious state of affairs, can be a complete arse when faced with a gadget in need of a firmware upgrade.

I've fixed the flat on the eldest crinklycub's islabike.  Removed the back wheel, got the tyre off without actually pulling a muscle this time, found the hole, patched it, put it all back together, pumped it up, noticed that the bead wasn't sitting quite right in one spot so deflated it, reseated it and re-inflated it, got the wheel back in and sorted the brakes out again.  And fitted (more-or-less, judicious application of a couple of cable ties would help) his bike computer that he got for Christmas while I was about it.  This is a completely unimaginable level of usefulness for me.

We'll see if it's still got any air in it in the morning!

Little spacer fitted under my stem. I can adjust it so the forks don't rattle anymore now.

Front wheel off due to being slightly untrue.  On route to the LBS.
Spare wheel in - tyre and tube moved over.
Bagman and Nelson off - seat adjusted - nose down slightly - Bagman and Nelson back on.

Cleaned the Dave Yates after the weekend's abuse.  Found the rear brake blocks almost gone so changed them.  Tried to increase the clearance under the frond mudguard by removing the bracket and zip tying it directly to the fork.  Ended up with it so tight that the wheel wouldn't even turn.  Pop riveted the bracket back on.  Tried to open it up wider to fit behind the fork.   Failed, and anyway then the light bracket fouled the steering.  In the end I put it back where it had started and bent it a little to improve clearance.  Why didn't I do that in the first place????

Finally closed the garage door at half past midnight.  Bah!  !0 minute job?!!

Last night, at club, a lad's mech seemed to have come apart, so he couldn't use the turbos.  I decided to have a look at it, and established that the bolt was still there, just undone and the jockey wheel was wonky.  It was pretty inaccessible, and an odd size, but I tightened the bolt, and he was OK.

He thanked me.  Then we set him up on the turbo.  He thanked me again.  Half way through the evening, he thanked me.  Then, as we were leaving, he said thank you.  Youth of today, eh?  No manners at all.  Take everything for granted. ;)

I has purchased a bottom bracket tool and I is gonna use it.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I made the gears work on my clunker. :)  It's great to have gears on that bike - riding everywhere in top was seriously hard work.
Now all I need to do is wire up the dynamo to the existing lights and see if they work (not counting on it).
