Rail travel in the UK isn't quite what it used to be.

Butterfly:
The locks and canals are in a rather better state now though :D.

border-rider:
I'm in Luxembourg.

I got here by Brommie-ing from home to Newport, train to Paddington and then Brommie to St Pancras.

Could I leave the Brom there ? No.  So it went on the train with me to Brussels, and is sitting in a locker at the Gare du Midi, where such things are less of a problem.  I then got the train to Lux.

This could all be done with a big bike, but the reliable getting of a bike on a FGW train to London and back has always eluded me.

Tom B:
I liked the precise description of the 'derailer' gears: "from 29 to 82". Does this suggest that cycle gear ratios were topics of everyday discussion in the 1950s?  :)

Actually, a Brommie tour of Europe might be quite fun, with judicious use of trains and a little quaffing in the buffet car.

<edit>

I notice that adult interrail cards are a mere 249 euros for 5 days within 10.

<edit again>

Although GB seems to be one of the very few countries not to offer a discount to residents to get to the border.  Bloody typical.
